Best Resolution System?

Personally, Im a huge fan of % roll under.

i.e. you have a broadsword skill of 65%.

Everyone knows what % means, its intuitive, easy to figure out what your chances are, and you can make everything run off it.
BRP uses it, such as Call of Cthulhu and Runequest

I've always loved the idea of a percentage system, but i have never really played a percentage-based game i thought was very tight or used the % format well for all aspects of their game. I toy with my own % systems often because i like the challenge. I agree that it is very intuitive.

Best percentile system I'm aware of is Unknown Armies. It has a few cool tricks, like allowing players to reverse the order of their rolls in special cases and making doubles (like 11, 22, etc.) special results. Also has a pretty cool insanity system, good game.

It's a basic 2d6+mods >= TN system, but has a nice little task system built up around it that lets you add detail to it and a sort of "Stat block" for tasks, a method for determing time, handling "uncertain successes" (allows you to give the player some indication of success or failure level without letting them nail it), handling mishaps and tasks that are simply to avoid dire consequences (d20 fans might call them "saving throws".

I'd completely forgotten that neat megatraveller mechanic. I'll have to see if I've still got my old rules around (bought it, read it, never played it).

FWIW I'm enough of a grognard that I liked THAC0 at the time since it was a huge improvement on what came before it... look up your level vs targets AC on a big table to see what the number was. We all found that the simple THAC0 calculation was a huge improvement on that (and THAC0 may have been formalised in 2e but it was around for years and years before 2e appeared). d20 is still considerably easier of course ;)

My favourite system was RQ2 % (as distinct from BRP%), I loved the way the resolution worked for both simple and opposed tasks.

Cheers
