Best RPG for my vacation with the wife

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check some of these out.

Right now I'm going with a D&D 4e basic set and probably the microlite 74 system since it fits into a sandwich bag.

Anything True 20, especially Blue Rose if you want to keep to a Fantasy setting. Rules light, crunch-light, tons o'fluff... and talking animals! The system is designed to focus on narration and minimize rules, but can be quite functional with 3.x with little tweaking necessary. Given that you can access the d20 SRD online, this means less books to carry!

Why not try something a little different. Get the GURPSlite PDF (free from SJ Games). It's a 32 page PDF with all the rules you need to try GURPS; the only other thing you need is 3d6 and you're done. GURPS is strong for 1-on-1 role-playing for a couple of reasons:

1) Character progression is driven through roleplaying rather than overcoming challenges, meaning the RP is the focus of the game, and 1-on-1 is RP heavy.

2) GURPS characters can be built to be very flexible, and as such they can 'solo' much more effectively than characters from a Class based game.

When I wanted to introduce my wife to RPGs, GURPS was the system I picked because I could just ask her to describe the type of character she wanted to play and I could stat it up for her.

Have a good holiday!
Cheers,
Dan

3.5 actually plays quite well with 1 PC, as I know from experience. Carcassone does, indeed, rock for two players. As does naughty chess and naughty scrabble.

Well good luck there is absolutely nothing I can think of that wouldn't get me banned that I can suggest. Whatever happens enjoy it, if you are like me and my wife I wouldn't be spending a single second wasted on anything but being away from the kids!

I'll second the Savage Worlds Test Drive rules since you're bringing all those dice anyway.

Also Risus works for this kind of thing. I was (am?) running a solo modern horror game for my wife using Risus. It's free and available for download. And the basic rules are like 5 or six pages and require only some d6's.

4e scales fine, so no worries there. If you don't have one just run into staples/kinkos/office depot and get some 8x8 or 8x10 maps laminated and presto, instant portable battlemat.
