Best Setting Books?

My d20 favorites are (in no particular order):
  1. Oathbound -- VERY unique, very well done, high magic world.
  2. Midnight -- Dark, fun to GM, but low-magic and very difficult for the players.
  3. Scarred Lands -- 3.0 still, but some of the BEST fluff out there. As stated already Divine and Defeated is very good, but I also really like some of the "region" books too. Calastia, Burok Torn, Mithril, Hornsaw, etc....
  4. Valus -- trust me. This one will get under your skin.

As for mini-settings:
  1. Bluffside -- an all time favorite
  2. Freeport -- What can you say? It hosted the first 3.0 modules. :)
  3. City State of Invincible Overlord -- Well done, generic and easy to dump into an existing setting.
  4. Many of the Necromancer Games mini-campaigns: Trouble at Durbenford, Lost City of Barakus, the Gray Citadel, etc.

What do I want to read?
  1. Iron Kingdoms
  2. Dark Legacies
  3. Codex Arcanis

Ravenloft also deserves mentioning. Just avoid the "3.5" Ravenloft Player's Handbook. Go for the Ravenloft Campaign Setting. They're essentially the same, but the Campaign Setting book doesn't have the screwy information plugged into the shoddy revision. Again, this is a dark setting. If that's a problem, avoid it. Where Midnight's more epic and Tolkien in nature, though, Ravenloft's more personal and closer to Shelley and Stoker.

I back this recomendation wholeheartedly. For a low magic gothic horror setting, or something different, Ravenloft is your choice!

And if you get the 3.5 book, read fan made reviews to see which strange new rules they added to the 3.0 text.

All the best settings seem to be dark, gritty horror settings. Anyone want to recommend a 3rd edition setting that isn't dark and depressing.

Many of the settings in this thread aren't dark or depressing. Neither the Wilderlands, nor Bluffside or Freeport are dark. Quite the opposite ;).

*Also likes Bluffside but then Hal enchanted me to say that ever time he appears* :p :)

But glad to see a lot of people enjoyed the SL stuff. I know I loved Divine and the Defeated too, but probably I liked the SLCS more in some ways. But that's just me.

Dawnforge.

Favorite D&D Setting ever.

Dawnforge is an amazing setting and one that somehow has gotten lost in the forest of settings out there. It is incredibly creative, beautifully rendered and is just a phenomenal place full of good crunchy bits and excellent fluff.

I would say that as a setting it is better and more well executed than most others in regards to adventure hooks, uniqueness, atmosphere, presentation. It has a very, very distinct personality. I believe it was second runner up to Eberron in the setting contest. It could never have won because it is no where near generic enough to fit all the D&D sacred cows. And I love it for that amongst the many other reasons.

My favorite settings are, in no particular order:

Dragonlance
Dawnforge
Forgotten Realms
Midnight
Dark Sun
My own setting
