Best simulacrum for AD&D 1st Ed feel

Actually, the AEC book looks fantastic. It provides 'advanced' replacement chapters for Labyrinth Lord's classes and spells chapters, and provides new monsters and new items to supplement the LL core book. After a brief read-through, I was hard pressed to think of anything I remember from AD&D that was missing. I know plenty of stuff is missing, but I just can't put my finger on it yet.
Good to hear. :)

Sorry if it seemed I was dumping/harshing on the retro clone movement or something. I don't bear them any ill will. Not at all. It's more a puzzlement thing rather than a dislike thing of any kind. It seems so easy and simple to organise getting and using "the real thing", that I end up baffled. But not hatin'.

I'll have to give the free version of the AEC a look when I get the chance. Maybe see if I can help spot the missing pieces. ;)

Re: Hero and GURPS. I understand that the systems are significantly different, but I'm game-system curious. I've had recommendations for both. I will definately check them out.

In that case I'll throw out the fan made Advanced Dungeons and Savages. You'll need a Savage Worlds core book ($10) + AD&S pdf + Your old Monster Books or D20 Monster Books if you use the free d20 to Savage Worlds conversion pdf. Total cost $10 if you use the 3.5 SRD for your Monsters or have access to some other Monster Books

I personally love the Labyrinth Lord game system. It feels exactly like the system I first fell in love with. And I understand the AEC is incredible too, although I've yet to use it in play. You can get them both for free. The only way you'll pay is if you want them in some sort of physical form. If not, you can do what I did and print them out, use a three-hole punch, and make a stylish and practical game binder for the price of one binder and printer ink.

It's seriously an awesome retro-clone. Look at it, at the very least, I implore you.

I ran a 1st ed ToE campaign for a while using a combo of C&C and 1st ed. Knowing that my players would be hesitant to pick up 1st ed stuff, I simply did it for them. I bought extra PHBs and UAs from Ebay (where they are cheap as chips) and loaned them out for the duration of the campaign. Total cost might have been 25-35 bucks.
