Best starting modules

I am about to start a new campaign and would like to get some feedback about your favorite starting modules. It can start anywhere from 1-4 level. (so a 3-6 level is okay, or a 4-7, or a 1-3, etc.)

I will be using it in Kalamar, so if the adventure requires campaign specific things it would not work well.

Having it tie into other modules is okay also.

Thanks

I had fun with the Kalamar adventure Root of All Evil. There's even 3.5 adaption information on their website.

I might also suggest Death in Freeport (revised) -- available in .pdf format. Freeport should be fairly easy to place in your Kalamar campaign.

Good luck with your campaign!

My favorite low-level adventure is Maiden Voyage, by Atlas/Penumbra. It's a horror adventure on the high seas, and like almost all Atlas/Penumbra titles, it's very well done.

One caveat: it takes an experienced DM to run it properly. Setting the mood is crucial, for one thing, for maximum tension and creepiness. For another, there are several NPCs with realistic personalities, complete with various motivations. If you're not comfortable distinguishing NPCs from one another by voice or mannerisms, or if you're not comfortable role-playing two or more NPCs conversing amongst themselves and with the PCs, the adventure probably isn't a good choice.

Other solid choices are Sunless Citadel, NeMoren's Vault, Crucible of Freya (though be cautious with this one, especially with 1st-level groups; it can be a meat grinder), and Death in Freeport (another highly atmospheric adventure).

I'd also recommend Maiden Voyage -- I've run it twice and it's great fun, as well as Death in Freeport. My favourite 1st level adventure, though, is Thirds of Purloined Vellum -- a city based adventure from Dungeon #88 involving rival thieves' guilds and greedy merchants. It's set in Athkatla in the Forgotten Realms but can easily be moved to another Arabian-flavoured city.

Cheers

Of Sound Mind, and a Converted N4 "Treasure Hunt" (in addition to the Freeport, NeMoren's Vault, Crucible of Freya adventures). I think Lost City of Barakus is also aimed at a begining party.

We had a great time running and playing Cruicible of Freya (and The Wizard's Amulet) by Necromancer Games. Ok - perhaps it isn't the best module if you want an intrigue that touches the highest authorities in the world, but with many additions on NG website it will give you hours of quality game sessions.

I used NeMorens Vault and my players seemed to like it, also Lost City of Barakus looks like a good way to kick off a campaign. Either shold be easy to tranport to Kalamar.

Agreeing with other people:

I've played and then later run NeMorens Vault - That's a very good module to start off a campaign.

The Freeport series was a lot of fun and would probably slot into Kalamar OK.

Which bit of Kalamar are you thinking of setting the game in?
