Best system to run an X-Men type game?

FYI, I wouldn't recommend the book's HP variant rules. There may be some errata, but just out of curiosity I converted a Brick villain over to it a week or so ago just to see how it worked out. The guy had 87 or so HP, and dealt 11d6 damage with an unarmed strike. None of my players are incredibly tough, so that guy would have slaughtered them to the man if we'd been on the HP system. YMMV.

this might be taboo (since this is a d20 board), but Marvel just released a new rpg. complete with a book on the X-Men. Inquest magazine about two months ago has an sample of the game. I got the core book and the X-men book. They are cool, thin, with tons of pics from the comics. The system I am still up in the air about. I really haven't had time to get into it though.

Our group just started using this system. I highly recommend it for Marvel Superheroes. It is a very easy system to use. The only complaint is that the books try to explain too much through example. But it is a good system.

For more information, go to Marvel Universe Roleplaying Board, its a board setup by the DM for our campaign. Its board for all things concerning the Marvel Roleplaying Books. Has Mutant & Mastermind to Marvel conversions and comparisons among other things.

lets see... i own HERO5, MnM, MARVEL saga, MARVEL the new thang, and even the counter collection 16 page jobber.

I have GMed or played in MnM and HERO5.

I love the XMEN.

I would recommend MnM.

The new Marvel thing even used the xmen and brotherhood as examples of their combat system in the book, but it felt like no Xmen battle i had ever seen (and did not look like fun as an RPG session eventeither.) If you think Jean and Scott vs Mystique and Sabretooth should play out as jean shutting down both the bad guys automatically, one per round, while scott is either jelloed by sabertooth or just keeping sabertooth busy while jean finishes the fight... then Marvel is the way to go. (I am not kidding... those were the fight examples.)

With MnM for an Xman game, you need to not allow too many PCs with collossus level armor plating, some people mistake the fact that you can build a PC with colossus level plating to equate to all the PCs should have colossus level plating... and build most of the characters with as much "amazing save damage" or more than armor, protection and force field and you end up with characters who can be hurt but not easily KOed. if you go for the XMEN suits = armor days instead of the yellow spandex days, then most XSUITS can be armor between +3 and +5 and various levels of amazing save damage (combat training) or outright evasion (avoiding damage by dodging) can reflect the various levels of training and keep Scott up and running in a super fight as well as colossus while making scott worry about guns while colossus does not.

The MNM game i am running now is just a little higher than this, with more than half the NPCs supers at risk from guns.

Speaking as a VERY old Hero fan (old in age and old in that I have on my shelf every ed. of Hero/Champ and have played them all lots of times) ... I suggest...

MUTANTS & MASTERMINDS!!

I really love this game it is great! I think it totally "gets" the comic book feel (at least for me and most everyone I game with). It is fast and fun and Hero Points really make you think about "how am I going to use my power?"

I like Hero and all but after the last game I ran using it I decided that I would never ever never again run a game using Hero for anything. I might play in one mind you but the amount of bookkeeping that a GM has to keep track of totally kills any fun for me (four or five villains a few henchmen, tracking SPEED Phase, STUN, BODY, END, REC, etc just got to be to much for me. Others seem to enjoy it and I say "good for you!"... it not to bad for a player as you only have one player to keep that all in mind for).

Again everyone is different and some people enjoy different things. Look at a few systems and go with what is fun for you and your group! Happy Slam-Fest!!!

M&M isn't just the best Supers game ever, it's actually becoming my prefered game to D&D.

Just stay away from Marvel Universe. d20 Modern, Hero, MSHAG, heck, V&V, before MU.
