You can bump up lower level spells so the DC's are higher. Cast spells like Charm person at 3rd level so the DC is 13 + ability mod instead of 11+mod.

At 5th-6th you still only have 3rd level slots so you can't bump them up to high but Heighten will let you continue use some of your low level spells longer in your career as the DC's will be able to keep getting bumped up.

I'd say that heighten spell is primarily useful for sorcerors. As a wizard, you can afford to learn higher level versions of the same effects and prepare them if you need a higher DC. A sorceror, on the other hand, may only be able to know one or two spells per effect. So if the sorceror decides that he only can afford to know Charm Person but not Charm Monster or Dominate Person or Dominate Monster, when he really wants to charm one of the iron willed guards to the duke's treasury, he'll need to Heighten the spell to get a decent DC.

Actually, Heighten Spell is the bomb for clerics too. At 13th level, a 1st level sanctuary is wimpy. A 6th level sanctuary is freaking outstanding, however. :)

As far as wizards and Heighten Spell, heightening any enchantment is groovy, as is heightened color spray, glitterdust, hypnotic pattern, blindness/deafness, ghoul touch, hold person...the list goes on and on.

IMO, Wizards can get the most use out of Heighten after 7th-9th level.

Picture: Minor Globe of Invulnerability. Drop that on yourself, and you can stand VERY near the point-of-origin for yoru own fireballs ... and you'll be unscathed. So will party members standing within 10' of you (meaning, if you're 5' or so behind the party fighter(s), you can drop fireballs into the enemy ranks with impunity).

The only catch, of course, is that Minor GoI negates ALL spells of 3d or lower level ... including buffs and haste.

So ... heighten those low-level spells, so they JUST barely work in the Globe's AoE. :D

The first thing to my mind is how it can be useful in Crafting Items.

Heighten Spell is a prereq for Eyes of Charming - probably a little out of your price range at the moment, but something to save up to create if you have/take Craft Wondrous Item. Heightened Wands would also be useful, in some cases raising the save DC dramatically.
