Better Paladin Mounts

In reading the Defenders of the Faith there is a list for Paladins who want a better mount, and what mounts they can get. The problem is that this book is a 3.0 book and (IMHO) a dire lion is not balanced at level 8 for a paladin. Does anyone know where a good list, or set of guidelines, can be gotten for improved paladin mounts? I know there is a list in the Players Guide to Monks and Paladins from Sword and Sorcery, but I was looking for something a little more official. Thanks.

I believe there is a list of alternate Paladin Mounts in the 3.5 DMG. Don't have it with me, so I can't give you an exact page #; it isn't in the SRD.

I like the list that is in Defenders of the Faith. I agree that a Dire Lion at level 8 is better than a heavy warhorse would be a level 8. However, the difference isn't as huge as you might think. The dire lion advances slower than the warhorse does so the horse will be more intelligent, have a better AC, and still be faster than the lion. The warhorse will gain spell resistance at level 15 while the dire lion won't gain it until level 18.

I agree that the lion is better, but I still think that it is balanced. If you don't think it is balanced, make the dire lion available at level 9 instead. That way it wouldn't gain spell resistance until level 19.

I don't think that everything should be compared to the warhorse though. In my opinion, the warhorse can be a fairly dull mount and is at the lower end of the power scale. The dire lion is at the upper end.

Everything SHOULD be compared to the warhorse... its the core paladin mount. If its on the low end of the scale compared with everything else thats been suggested (in splatbooks etc) thats because splatbooks usually contain better stuff in them, good incentive to get people to buy them.
