Big Hammer?

Don't have any FR stuff, but there's a really big hammer in the DMG: the Maul of the Titans. It counts as a +3 GreatClub.

The only reason I can think of as to why greatclubs aren't simple weapons is that they didn't want all clerics and sorcerers running around with them.

Other than that, they are inferior to greatswords and greataxes in every way (except price, of course ;)).

I think a martial, two-handed hammer should compete with its peers. So that is why I set it at 1d12.

But to each his/her own. YMMV.

Not to go all non-core here, but Relics and Rituals (Sword and Sorcery) has the Greathammer (Dwarven) Exotic Size:L Cost:30 Wt:25 Damage:1d10 Critrange:20 Critmult:x2

Arcanis has the Tralian hammer 2d8 P/B x4 (Martial!!!)

I wouldn't recommend that your DM allow it though--it's rather unbalanced. (Arcanis also has short swords that deal 2d8 damage and feats that let you cast CLW once per character level--it may all be balanced in that setting but remove it from the setting and you're not looking at a balanced situation anymore).

Really, I don't think there'd be anything wrong with using the rules to upsize the warhammer.
Martial 2d6 B x3 crit.
The warhammer, battle axe and longsword are roughly equivalent. That would be roughly equivalent to the greataxe and greatsword.

The scale-ups really don't work that well. The d8 -> 2d6 is excessive. Sure, it matches long/bastard sword -> greatsword, but it doesn't match anything else.

I'd still tend to agree that the greatclub fits better as a simple weapon and a hypothetical large martial hammer would be reasonable at d12 20/x3, like the greatax, since the battle ax and warhammer share a similar relationship.

It has been errata'd to Exotic.

The feat was errata'd to once per day (but without a cap on the level mod, so evenually you heal 1d8+20).

I'm not aware of the shortsword you are referring to, unless you mean the Gladius, which does 1d8 but cannot be finessed.

I think that if you do the numbers you'll find that d8 -> d12 -> 2d8 and d6 -> d10 -> 2d6 give much neater progrssions, especially the first one.

I'll second that :)

Actually, you're "thirding" it.

Technically, Tony Vargas seconded my original point as to the greatclubs being better as simple weapons and d12s for greathammers thing.

But who's counting. ;)

I suggested the d12 Large warhammer first. ;) So Nyah!

Oh yeah?!?

Well, I actually gave reasons behind my decision and expressed a complete and coherent rational behind the change.

All you did was basically say, "d12 sounds OK, I guess, but I will defer to Corwin for an official ruling when he gets here" (paraphrased, of course).

;)

Oh yeah!?

I said to parlay! I didn't see any fancy french words in *your* post.

All I see is basicly 'Well, I'll wait for Xarlen to jump in first, and then I'll mop the floor afterwards' (Paraprhased, of course).

;);)
