There was an SNL skit with Jennifer Garner called "This Wal-Mart is Sooooo Big." Of course, it was comedy, but there might be some stuff you can pull out of it. There were bits on "different weather systems," and "different cultures," in different parts of the store.
I like this idea. Advance it about 10 years in the future (before the bombs), take some of the weirdness from current mega-malls and mega-casinos (attached living quarters, etc), and you might get some even more interesting concepts.
