Big Money, Big Prizes!

the Jester

Legend
So what does your group consider to be an exceptional amount of treasure? I am presently running a low-magic, low-wealth game and the group is 3rd-4th level. They just found 400 gp, 1000 sp and some goods worth about 175 gp. This is more money than they've ever seen in one place. When one player showed up shortly afterward and they said that they found a huge treasure, he started guessing at 20 gold. He didn't believe them at first when they said "hundreds of gold"!

So what's big money, big prizes to you?

The group in my game is 9th level. They recently got taken to the cleaners by the local thieves' guild (long story). They lost 1000 GP and it was about half their total cash on hand. They have a few hundred squirrelled away elsewhere, but they're pretty ticked off about it. :)

The players in my Dark Sun game got very excited at the prospect of getting themselves some real metal weapons recently. They stole a bunch from a merchant caravan and were so thrilled that they decided to set themselves up in business as a trading house. Of course, DS economics are a bit skewed, but it's always a treat to see players get all flushed with excitement over a box of shortswords.

The players in the previous DS game were most excited at finding some potions - not because of the magical nature of the potions, but because they came in real glass bottles. Oh, the coveting that took place on that day...

I recently gave my 8th level PCs the largest award they have gotten to date. The five PCs got a total of 4,000 gp each, for a total of 20k gp for the party. It was kind of funny because I hadn't planned on giving it to them, but the barbarian of all people convinced the captain of the guard that they did an equal amount of the work (natural 20 Diplomacy) as another group who was getting paid 40k gp, and the PCs took half their reward. Hi-larious.
