Come on, Mass Effect bears some resemblence to Star Wars. Like you said, both are space sci-fi with alien races and strange planets. Both have intergalactic governments and the associated politics. Both have an elite organaztion (Jedis/Spectres) that has some connection to those governments. It has no resemblance to Star Wars at all, except that it's in space... and there are multiple planets and some alien races... but the core of what Mass Effect is will be drastically different and superior to Kotor, and as sacreligious as this sounds, I bet the core story of Mass Effect and the story it tells will be superior to anything ever told in a Star Wars movie or novel or comic book.
I'm not trying to make any grand statements about the virtues of either universe. I'll be happy if I never see any of the Star Wars movies a second time, so I don't really have the desire to talk about Star Wars that much. I'm just saying, if someone likes KOTOR, they should definitely give Mass Effect a look.
