Birthright-like online game experiences, anyone?

Hi all,

Since I will be away for a long time during the summer,
I am considering to offer the players of my PbP game the chance to play on somehow on their own.
I had thought of letting them leading a big army into a decissive battle or something alike,
instead of the usual dungeon crawl, and letting them flesh out the details and the ongoing action for themselves.

Now, I have no idea how to do this without...

A) Opening at least the possibility that the party
moves the campaign into a direction I had not foreseen.

B) Burden any of the players with the position of being the DM, which also could open problems,
since the campaign is already like 75%, and I do not want it to move into another direction again...

Cannot reveal what campaign it is, for some some of my players are probably browsing these boards from time to time...
Now, I can reveal as much as that the game's homepage is
http://mmrpg.zeitgeistgames.com/ ;)

I know this question is very specific, but I hope you can help me out somehow...

Thank you,

Rafael

I once played in a game totally unrelated to DnD but which did involve the players taking the role of Kingdoms in a low magic fantasy world.

The World had a map and each turn we posted Kingdom Orders (a series of actions) for the DM to resolve
Alongside the Kingdom Orders we also posted a narrative peice linked to one or more of the actions.
Between turns the players involved would then 'play out' these narratives and any results posted by the DM thus creating an ongoing story

I enjoyed it...
