[Black Company] Magic thread

It seems, and I might be mistaken since I don't have the book yet (I'm a GIANT Black Company fan), that creating spells during play would be time consuming and might interupt the flow of play. Has anyone actually played BC yet? How has off-the-cuff spell casting worked for your group?

I'm thinkin' that having a premade "spellbook" for the magic-casting character you're playing might be most useful.

They suggest doing this in the book - having 'common' effects that you use statted out. Then if you want to use something similar, you can build off of that effect rather than creating it from scratch.

Doc,

I haven't tried in practice yet...but a number of the playtesters have commented across a number of threads that it did take some getting used to...but once players/DMs had some experience with the new system, it became second nature to "craft-n-cast on the fly". I think part of it is that you only have a talent (spell) or two to worry about in the beginning for each wizard or dabbler...so you don't have to worry about a huge number of effects.

That said...your idea is still very good. Similar to what yaun-ti has done with the wizard Fork over at the Green Ronin boards...pre-stat a couple of common effects that you would call on. Then you can tweak those using the Spell Reference Table for more variables as needed.

I am going to add an NPC wizard soon, as well, and put up some pre-made effects for his talents... which will be different from Fork's talents. I am planning on starting a thread with just spell effects, as well.

It IS time consuming if you do it off the cuff. Having them prewritten is a good idea.

It's the same thing I tell people to do with their Power Attack, Expertise, and other feats that change their base numbers on a round by round basis. Works well.
