I actually wouldn't mind Raimi. True his style of directing may be a bit wilder than Jackson's, but he can handle a narrative and emotional scenes pretty well.

But, Peter Jackson and WETA have to be invoved in some capacity. Maybe PJ can produce and have WETA be the production and effects house for the movie. Of course, the film has to be shot in New Zealand. No sense in looking for other scenery, after all.

And as for the cast, all the principals must return. Namely Ian Mckellen, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis. Haven't a clue on who to cast for the others, but I've got a good candidate for Bilbo:

For those not in the know, that's Martin Freeman. Best known for playing Tim from The Office (the original UK version), and Arthur Dent from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Then they should settle it with PJ and then regain their money back from Hobbit box office revenue as well as DVD sales.
Well, I don't know what the "practices" are that are in dispute, but if we accept Jackson wants arbitration and New Line doesn't, then we can assume that arbitration would be bad for New Line. That aside though, if we accept what Jackson says about them offering to settle if he agrees to Hobbit, then I think it's also a safe bet that New Line is not so sure of the deal Jackson WANTS for Hobbit.

I mean, if Jackson wants a bigger cut of Hobbit, so he's holding out, and New Line is also having to give (er, MGM? the other company) a cut, plus they can't even get the project started for years and years... well, maybe they are better served finding someone else to do it. I think the Hobbit is different enough that it shouldn't really "match" the feel of LotR (though I imagine the prequel should), so a different director might be a good idea.

Especially since I don't think that the cast should be automatically be the same, though it would be nice. Going non-Jackson does free their hand a little.

Excellent idea!

I am not at all convinced that fans will flock to a non-Jackson movie on the subject.

In my circle of friends about 10 people saw the lord movies in a theatre. I don't think anyone besides me and one girl really knew or cared that it was Jacksons. You're still right though, fans might not flock to non-Jackson movie, but the big bucks come from non-dedicated fans.

Or from repeated vieawings and DVD and Extended DVD sales to fans.

On other news, Sir Ian McKellen implied heavily that he won't be Gandalf in a Hobbit movie that isn't directed by PJ. And Saul Zaentzszszs, president of the company that owns the rights to Tolkien's works, was pretty clear on the subject: "Peter Jackson WILL direct the Hobbit". He said that New Line is rushing to produce the movie before the rights revert to Zaentszszszs, but even if they make it, he'll just produce a new Hobbit movie afterwards that is directed by PJ.

Good choice, though I think I'd prefer Iam Holm to return as Bilbo. Orlando Bloom could have a short walk-on cameo with the Elf King (preferrable not a speaking part). John Rhys-Davies would be outstanding as Beorn (assuming you don't delete that segment). Get a bunch of unknown new actors to play the dwarves, and some upcoming action movie heartthrob to play Bard.

Dueling Hobbits ... just what we need. :uhoh:

Not to take away from the talents of such a brilliant actor like Ian Holm, but he is much too old now to return as a young Bilbo. I'd prefer a younger Brit actor, like Freeman, to take on the role. Watching him in The Office, I think he has the chops to handle Bilbo's meek and unassuming nature.

Oh, and why must every large character with a booming voice require someone like Rhys Davies to play him? Surely there are others just as adequate? People like Brian Blessed. As booming a voice as one can come by:

Just slap on a crazy ass wig, plus some animal fur for clothing, and you got your half man/ half bear right there. :)

And as for Bard, I always assumed he was older than your average hearthrob. Why not cast the role with a rugged fortysomething actor? Heck, it worked for Aragorn with Viggo Mortensen, why shouldn't it for Bard? Unfortunately, no name comes to mind for me at the moment, but you get what I mean. Leave the hearthrobs for the elves. :p
