...Because it's PLOT. It's STORY. They didn't roll dice, and Arthur didn't decide to go off into the Ogre Cave instead of dealing with the Hydra like the story wanted him to. So don't tell me that you want the freedom to do anything you want in the game and not get led around by some horrible DM-inflicted plot, but at the same time you want the plot-based protection on all your items and equipment.

Wow!!! Talk about straw men!

Where do you get this "all your items and equipment" from? Having more than one signature item is rather rare. Arthur had 2 or 3 significant magic items, only one of which is his signature item. Most characters have exactly zero.

"Signature item" should not be some free plot immunity benefit that a DM hands out to keep a whiny character happy. It really should be a matter of give and take. The PC can be expected to spend both loot and xp to enhance and protect the item. Perhaps go on a quest to find out a secret in its past. It could be intelligent and have a significant roleplaying presence.

Unleash your imagination.

After all, there is actually a middle ground between scripted play and a CRPG.

Still, I can only imagine Arthur's player telling the DM:
"Aw c'mon, the guy slept with my WIFE!!! Why can't I kill him?!"

"Slept with my wife? Whatever. Does he agree to go on the dragon hunt with me? Merlin says I am not fated to die for a while so it is time to Par-TY up!"

If you and your players are happy with the game you run, then you are running a good game and thats the most important thing.

After all DMing style is all relative to a particular group.

A player who gets upset over die rolls is definitely immature. But one who gets upset because a DM did something he felt was inappropriate is perfectly justified in being upset without loaded labels like "whiner" or "munchkin".

me happy

This topic realy goes to the root of why people game. And it also realy points out that some people just shouldn't ever share a table.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Those who fear un-predicted loss should just sit down and DM for themselves. If I knew for damn sure that I wouldn't miss my tricks in skateboarding, if I knew for sure I wouldn't fall down, I wouldn't skate. People applaud a 360 flip over the pyramid because to do it you have to wade through pain and dissapointment galore. That's the whole rush. "I fought the curb and...I won!"
