One of the most common misunderstandings of AD&D 1st Ed. was the presumption that the lucerne hammer was a kind of hammer, when it's really not.

Historically, reach weapons are slashing and piercing weapons to be held against a charge of enemies.
Bludgeoning weapons would be too heavy to weild effectively at the end of a pole.
The lucern hammer's "Hammer" is really just a heavy weight so you can "drop" the peircing end down onto someone on horseback or such. The heavy weight on the end means you don't have to "swing" it at all. You just let it fall, and the weight of the hammer is enough to puncture armor and such.
While you COULD just "drop" a heavy bludgeoning weapon like that, it's just not as lethal as when the weight is driving a spike through someone.
But FORGET realism. We want reach bludgeoning weapons. This is D&D, afterall.
