[Blue Devil Games] Passages - Literary Adventure in the Victorian Era

Blue Devil Games is happy to announce the release of its latest and greatest role-playing game: Passages, the game of literary adventure in the Victorian era. The game is available now in pdf format at RPG Now. It will debut in print format at Gen Con SoCal and be available directly through Indie Press Revolution and through distribution via Key 20. You can download the FREE 26-page Demo, which includes the table of contents and the Introduction with a summary of the new system.

A little bit about the game from the product page:

Blue Devil’s Passages
Dainty. Palatable. Non-Constipating.

The only Game Preparation which is uninjurious to the digestion because of the slow measured absorption of rules and use of a single icosahedron for resolution. The only Game Preparation of agreeable taste to all palates, and an excellent substitute for Cod-Liver oil. Prescribed by eminent practitioners to lymphatic and scrofulous children; to adolescents for troubles associated with growth, amenorrhoea, etc.; to adults for asthma, syphilis, and female hysteria; and to all ages for chronic bouts of ennui.
Heed some of the many verifiable testimonials of those who have employed Passages to a great boon upon their well-being:

“After utilizing Passages for just a few days, eyes become bright, the cheeks glow with colour and life, movements are brisk, and there is a complete absence of weariness and depression—all without risk of splitting one’s personality.” - Robert Louis Stevenson

“Just one phial is akin to a new accelerator that stimulates all round, that wakes you up for a time from the crown of your head to the tip of your great toe, and makes you go two—or even three—to everybody else's one.” - Professor Gibberne

“Curative of all things uffish. There are games offered as substitutes which appear as mirror images of Passages but which are dangerous as a bandersnatch—be sure to ask for Passages by name.” - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson

“C'est magnifique!” - Jules Gabriel Verne

Passages is crafted by the skilled chemists of Blue Devil Games.
Lifetime supply now only $32.95!

Passages presents a new role-playing system that features:
  • A single d20 for resolution of all conflicts.
  • Only two kinds of checks: attribute checks and skill checks.
  • Combat and grappling as skills.
  • Classless, point-based character creation.
  • Degrees of success and failure based on "spread."
But Passages is so much more than just a new rpg system, it's a fully realized literary campaign setting of the Victorian era. Take the helm of the Nautilus! Cross swords with the Scarlet Pimpernel! Match wits with the devious Professor Moriarty! Anything is possible in the world of Passages.

Game design by Justin D. Jacobson. Setting material by Richard Farrese. Art direction by Jennifer Rodgers. Layout and graphic design by Philip J. Reed

We have a bunch of free support available and coming down the pipeline for the game. We'll be posting a free introductory adventure soon called "Spooring of the Jabberwock", and we'll be posting regular entries of "Dramatis Personae", your favorite literary characters described and statted up for use in play.

I'm particularly excited about the new system of mechanics. I'll be fleshing them out a little more and releasing them separately as a standalone multi-genre system called Bullseye 20.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about the setting or the system.

Be still my heart. Dude, you have me all aflutter with this. Seriously. I feel like a schoolboy.

I want this. I need this.

Noooooooooo! Just as I thought I'd nailed down the must-have indie games to spend my hard earned cash on in November this comes along. Must have! Must have!

As a playtester for this product, I cannot recommend it strongly enough. The new character generation system is intuitive and freeform. The setting is compelling, with plenty of flavorful quotes, fascinating trivia and easily extracted from the rules if you'd prefer to use the setting with d20 Modern or True20. When I volunteered to playtest Passages, I doubted I would take after it. I feel a lot more comfortable with swords and sorcery than Victoriana. After I read the first four or five chapters, I dreamt up my own sprawling Passages campaign. I got distracted by the Age of Worms, but it's definitely something I'd like to return to now the proper pdf is released.

Also, if these things matter to you, the editing is impeccable. I spotted one typesetting error on my read-through, and that's been fixed.

Edit: Actually, there is one error. There is an advertisement for Bullseye20 with a link to www.bluedevilgames.com/bullseye20, but that URL doesn't exist. I suggest you update your website as soon as possible, or people will visit the website, not find the page, forget all about Bullseye20, and you'll lose any benefit you could have gained from that advertisement.

Erm...

Something I noticed really fast.

It doesn't have any bookmarks. Can that be fixed, possibly? The PDF is so big (And absolutely GORGEOUS) that bookmarks really would help.

I'm really impressed so far, even though I've only done a cursory glance through it.

Awesome Stuff.

That's weird. I did the bookmarks myself. I'll definitely update that and send it out. Thanks for pointing out the problem.

Well, the Bullseye 20 page is up. It just has our tagline ("A multi-genre system that hits the mark.") and "coming soon", but hey it's something. I'll actually have some meaningful content up there starting in the next couple of weeks.

And, for the record, I won't be able to get the bookmarked pdf up until next week. (If you're in the mood for excuses: My wife's out of town and I'm taking care of the baby, i.e., zero time.)
