Boardgames more popular than videogames?

I'm looking forward to seeing this lineup that they're pasting an AH logo onto. Sadly, I doubt any of it will hold a candle to the wargames that made AH famous. Hope I'm wrong about that.

AH has put out some very good games recently. Risk 2210 A.D. being one of them. Personally I would like to see them bring back Titan.

I'll agree that board games are in for a renaissance. My gaming group has shifted to playing Settlers of Catan every week, even our non-gamer wives join in. RPGs have become a once a month event now.

They've done a good job with some of the new stuff and rereleasing robo-rally, well, that was just damn smart.

And I wonder if they count Axis and Allies miniatures in there?

Or all the Risks variants?

Or... yeah, there's a lot going on in the boardgame departments...

Good board games are wonderful for multiple players in the same room. There are fewer video games that have the same appeal (Note the Same Room addendum).

I've gotten on a boardgame kick lately. Most of my money has been going to Fantasy Flight Games. Arkham Horror and Doom being two great games, and they have Descent: Journeys in the Dark, a Doom expansion, and World of Warcraft coming out this year...maybe. (FFG is really bad about comeing anywhere close to a projected release date.) I've also picked up Memior '44 (I need to get to two expansions sometime) and Strat-O-Matic baseball and all sorts of Heroscape stuff this year as well. These games eat up more time than any of the computer games that I own (though X-Men Legends 2 has been getting a lot of play time lately).

As far as more people playing boardgames than videogames...I have a hard time believing that. It could be true, but I would like to see the stats on who they polled. It seems like the video gaming industry is booming these days, and what was once the hobby of kids and teenagers now is widely accepted by adults as well. If more people are playing boardgames though, great. I honestly think they are better for the mind that 99% of the video games on the market.

Just FYI (and mine), the Avalon Hill games at present are as follows.

* Axis and Allies (and variants)
* Axis and Allies Miniatures
* RoboRally (yay!)
* Nexus Ops
* Monsters Menace America
* Sword and Skull
* Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Risk
* Diplomacy

I think they're moving more towards the "Designer" games, rather than classic war games.

Cheers!

With the rise of the European (or Designer) board games, I think we're seeing a corresponding rise in players for those games.

I play both Settlers of Catan and Carcassone quite frequently... there are plenty of interesting games out there at present.

Then too, board games in Europe are bigger and more mainstream than in the states - though that may be changing.

Cheers!
