BoED Voluntary Poverty Regeneration

Regeneration(Ex): At 17th level an ascetic heals 1 point of damage per level every hour rather than every day. (This ability cannot be aided by the Heal skill.) Nonlethal damage heals at a rate of 1 point of damage per level every 5 minutes.

I am rather confused about this ability.

It does not list what causes real damage and heals both lethal and nonlethal damage.

So either it is not really regeneration (sounds like a strange version of fast healing), or your character can not be killed by hp lose since nothing is real damage (and if it was you would 'regenerate' it.

So what the heck does it mean?

It means tis not really regeneration. Its to slow to be real regeneration anyway (which is X per round), should probably be called Quicker Healing Rate I suppose. Its just fairly cruddy Fast Healing (being per level instead of per round.)

it is sortof like the ring of regen, but even worse.

Effectively it is a non-ability, it will almost never matter. Why didnt they just give the poor guy fast healing 1? it is well defined and works nicely, but rather ineffectually, at those levels.

The ring of regen is listed as 90k I believe, and it might be worth a tenth of that, maybe.

srd:
Regeneration: This white gold ring continually allows a living wearer to heal 1 point of damage per level every hour rather than every day. (This ability cannot be aided by the Heal skill.) Nonlethal damage heals at a rate of 1 point of damage per level every 5 minutes. If the wearer loses a limb, an organ, or any other body part while wearing this ring, the ring regenerates it as the spell. In either case, only damage taken while wearing the ring is regenerated.
Strong conjuration; CL 15th; Forge Ring, regenerate; Price 90,000 gp.

not even close ;) It isnt even all that useful really. Especially for that pricetag!!

Why couldn't you reach a different conclusion? You could say that it is true regeneration except it is very slow. You still could not be slain by hit point damage.

Because it specifically says Heals not that the user treats all damage as subdual damage except X. The creature heals subdual damage at Y points per round.

Which is what real regeneration does, you can still die quiet nicely from HP loss with a ring of regeneration or a Ring of kinda fast healing as its more applicably called.

I see. I'm surprised that they didn't change the name then, as regeneration is extremely misleading.

But I guess Ring of Kind of Fast Healing But Not Really doesn't have much of a ring to it?;) PUN INTENDED!

People don't think healing 'level' hit points per hour is good?

Er, I know in my games it'd speed up camp time. Normally, players withdraw and use a bunch of cure light wound wands and lay on hands.

It's nice to know, for example, that when I go to camp for the night, and I'm 10th level, I don't have to heal the 80 hit points I've lost. 8 hours later, I'll be fine...

Of course it depends on your campaign, but with "standard magic" DnD, you have serious problems if you are relying on time to heal your wounds at 10th level.

Also, there is no mechanic in the 3.5 rules for loss of limbs, so the "re-attach" your limb is effectively useless. And a ring of regneration certainly won't save you from vorpalization.
