BoEF - Store or Use?

I was at my local Waldenbooks looking for something to use my 25% off coupon on tonite and, of course, wandered to the rpg materials. As you probably know from experience, WB doesn't exactly stock a whole lot of d20 material (at least not the stores around me). Well, I pretty much owned every WotC release except Races of Destiny but that really hasn't caught my interest yet. And then, stuck in the corner of the shelf, I spy a shrinkwrapped Book of Erotic Fantasy.

"Hmm," methinks, "that was controversial. Probably fetch a good buck in the shrinkwrap a few years down the road." So I snatched it up for a mere $25 and went home. Now, after reading a few reviews on the book, my interest is piqued. My original plan was to sell the book later but I'm not sure I can resist having a look inside. Thus, my dilemma.

Do I open the shrinkwrap and have a look (thus devaluing the tome for later resale) or do I store it away until 3 more editions of D&D have come and gone?

it was a fun read. I doubt I'll ever use it but I don't regret gettign it and opening it. I don't think even shrinkwrapped it will be of much value unless you find the right persons on like ebay.

While normally for gaming books I recommend to just keep them this has the added benefit of having pr0n in it so yeah - keep it sealed and leave it on your shelf for about 10 years. Should be worth a pretty penny by then. Why on earth would you actually want to open it? I can give some keywords to google if you want to look at stuff like that ;)

Isn't it still available for sale? On ENWorld's Shop, even?

Heh, you are forgetting EBay Idiot Syndrome (EIS), a mental impairment that occurs when someone with more money than sense thinks that he is about to be outbid on something he can get cheaper someplace else.

The Auld Grump, who has proven immune to that dread disease...

*EDIT* My recommendation: Store it, then but a PDF of it if it shows up on DTRPG or RPGNow, there won't be that much you will use, but there is some cool content. (The mirror spells were way to useful to be in that book...)

Hmmm, my understanding of the book's contents seems to be very different from what yours seems to be. I don't have it, though, so maybe you're right.

In any case, I'd open it.

Was it sold shrink-wrapped normally, or just for purchase there?

Open it up dude.

You wanna invest some money, buy stocks or bonds, not RPG's.

Shrink wrapped with a label appled to the wrap that reads "For Mature Readers Only". Taking off either the wrap or the label would be akin to cutting the tag off of a Beanie Baby, or losing the dust jacket off a first edition novel.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* And that attitude is why toys and RPGs do become collector's items, so many get used, abused, and destroyed. (I know, 'cause I have used, abused, and destroyed my fair share of both!)

We use some things from it, as we have a female cleric of Myrrhis in our campaign (Greyhawk deity of love). Some of the spells are already used and a prestige class will come into play sooner or later. And it has really some good stuff in it.

We have two copies of the book in our group, but I have not unwrapped mine, and I will try to leave it that way, as the other copy is passed around from session to session between the DM, the player and the owner.

About the level of romance and intimacy in our campaign I can only say we are still on testing grounds as the player of the cleric and the DM handle this thing carefully and do not drift into pron, but we are also drifting well into areas not suitable for youths... the boundaries are pushed further little by little to see if everyone is still comfortable with the level of detail employed. Some things are tested in a private session between player and DM, and perhaps the next time such a thing can happen in front of the group.

In another group this kind of roleplaying led to lots of distracting chauvinistic comments from other players, and the DM and the female player came to the conclusion to abandon this level of detail from the game.

It always depends on the mixture of your group, and how fast these boundaries are pushed forward.
