Bonus types

Thanks! (So the list is simply armor, enhancement, feat, item, power, proficiency, racial, and shield. And untyped.)

Next question: 3E sported things like the inherent bonus type you got from Wish and Tomes (bonuses to ability scores). While I realize just slapping something like this onto a regular item isn't appropriate for 4E, have anything like this surfaced at all? (artefacts perhaps?)

And would that then introduce new types of bonuses, or simply make them untyped?

To my knowledge (and I've read pretty much all non-adventure 4e sourcebooks to date), there is no such item. I suspect that item-based ability score modifications are a thing of the past, as combat in 4e is tailored around a certain hit rate.

And would that then introduce new types of bonuses, or simply make them untyped?

They have avoided saying specifically that they won't introduce new types, but my feeling is that it most likely will not occur.

A good rule of thumb for introducing new items in 4e is to type all bonuses if at all possible into one of the already existing categories, and avoid untyped bonuses. Introducing new sources of stacking +1's here and there quickly unbalances the game.

Excellent reply, aurance - thanks!

So best bet (yeah, I know unbalanced alert and so on) would be proficiency - or possibly racial. No, guess only profiency cuts it.

Again thanks

Ok so I have a question regarding bonuses and stacking.

Dwarven Weapon Training provides a +2 to damage. Exotic Fighting Style, augments the Fighter power of Sure Strike by allowing you to include the weapon proficiency bonus to the damage. I'm using a Waraxe. The damage before the EFS feat is 1d12+2. With that feat, in theory, it'd be 1d12+4.

Should these bonuses stack? Is the Dwarven Weapon Training considered to be a Racial bonus to damage? Is the damage granted by the EFS feat considered to be a power bonus because the feat augments the power?

My DM put in a question, but I wanted to see what you guys had to say, as I also intend to DM and would like to get a grasp on this.

The bonus from DWT is a feat bonus because it says 'feat bonus' in the feat.

As for whether they stack, it depends on the bonus type of Exotic Fighting Style. (Sounds like it might make Sure Strike decent!)

DWT is a "+2 feat bonus to damage," while EFS doesn't even grant a bonus. Yes, they "stack" though stacking doesn't even come into the question.

You don't have to decipher what kind of bonus various things give you. It will say "+X <BONUS TYPE> bonus." If there is no bonus type, it is untyped and stacks with everything.

I dont have the PHB in front of me, so I couldnt remember the text from either feat. I just had the info I put in an email to my DM last night letting him know what I'd chosen.

Thanks for the clarification.

Altho EFS might be worded that it grants a weapon's proficiency bonus to damage, in which case it would be a named 'proficiency' bonus.
