Book of the Righteous Holy Warrior 3.5

I asked this question over at Green Ronin's forums, but their support for BotR has unfortunately not been what I had hoped and people don't frequent the BotR boards very much.

Two questions:

1) Has anyone tried to update the Holy Warrior to 3.5? Given how the paladin now gains his powers at different levels, the "Guardian" and "Champion" domains as written no longer make a 3.5 PH paladin as originally intended.

2) Has anyone created any new Holy Warrior domains? I believe that GR was supposed to add some on the "Tree of Life" but never did.

Nope, you are not the only one using the book :)

OTOH, I have not converted to 3.5, as a player or as a GM, so I hadn't really thought of converting the Holy Warrior.

Would it be that much different? I am unsure...

What one of my DMs, who has been using BotR for 3.5 has done, is continue to use the 3.5 paladin for anyone who wants to play it. Other Holy Warriors are handled on a case by case basis. In general, those who get smites or similar abilities, gain extra uses as the paladin does. Those who don't tend to get either more powerful Gift of God abilities, or ones that can be used more often.

Sort of a quick and dirty fix, but no one has yet complained.

It would be different mainly b/c in 3.0 the paladin didn't receive Smite Evil until 2nd level and it didn't gain multiple uses per day as it does now.

So, you can no longer recreate a PH Paladin with the Champion and Guardian holy warrior domains, as they are currently written. Before, the HW got two powers from each HW Domain at 1st level and 1 power from each HW Domain at 2nd level. However, with the way the domains are currently written this progression won't necessarily work any more.

It's not a big deal to change those two domains to match the PH Paladin a little more closely, but then it makes me wonder how the other domains should be changed to compensate.

And, also, I'm just curious if anyone else has created any new HW domains.

@Samothdm -- I haven't done this *yet* but it's definitely on my to-do list. I don't much like the paladin tweeks in 3.5 (especially the Pokemon mount power), but I still think it's valuable to update the Holy Warrior, since everything else I use is 3.5. I'll keep this thread in mind if I get around to this particular task this weekend.

We haven't finished the holy warrior update yet, but the unholy warrior got a 3.5 revision in the Book of Fiends. If you take a look at that, you'll see the basic structure of how the updated holy warrior will work as well. We did redesign the class so you can build the new paladin with the holy warrior, which basically means each domain has three different abilities instead of two.

Cool - thanks for the response, Chris. BotR is one of my favorite d20 purchases and I've been working with it a lot lately to flesh out the religions in my homebrew.

I also realize that updating old 3.0 stuff to 3.5 isn't necessarily a "money making venture" for you all. So, I appreciate that you guys are taking the time to update this class.

the folks at Green Ronin had actually done a survey not to long ago asking if they should update the holy warrior to "mimic" how the 3.5 paladin had changed. i don't know what the end determination was since they only said "thanks, we have the info we need" but looking at the responses they got, several seemed to voice the opinion to do just that: update the holy warrior to mimic how the 3.5 paladin changed.

Obviously, I would imagine it's a low priority sort of thing since they are no doubt highly interested in still keeping the rest of their product line on schedule.

:)

(jut my two cents, I could be saying something wrong -- but that's as best as I recall from what was said on that thread some months back).
