Book of Vile Darkness: Drug Addiction Rules

Hello everyone,

I've been reading the Drug Addiction rules in the Book of Vile Darkness (by good ol' Monte Cook), and I have some questions. Basically, I don't understand the mechanics by which an addicted character maintains "satiation", and thus avoids the need to take penalties on their abilities -- if indeed this is possible using the rules as written.

I don't have the rules in front of me (sorry), but it seems that the characters must roll a Fortitude save vs. the Addiction DC (i.e. 10 for a "Medium" Addictive drug, 6 for a "Low" Addictive drug, etc.) or suffer negative effects. Then, after a certain period of time has elapsed (i.e. 10 days for a "Low" addictive drug, 5 days for a "Medium" addictive drug, unless I remember it wrong), when the character really starts jonesing for the drug, the character must make another Fortitude save, but this time the save DC is +6. And if they make two saves in a row, they become un-addicted (that part I understand.)

My questions are:

* It's unclear how often the character has to make a Fortitude save vs. the lower Addiction DC (without the +6 DC). Do they have to do this every day, even if they're taking the drug every day? Or do they only have to do this after the "satiation" period expires (after 5 days, 10 days, etc.?) And in that case, when does the +6 DC come into effect?
* According to these rules, do you have to make Fortitude saves every day/week/etc. to avoid ability score penalties even IF you have an unlimited supply of the drug? Because if so, that's not suitable for my campaign... I need long-term drug abuse to be a viable option... ;)

If anybody has any insight into these drug rules, let me know.

On page 42, first column, under satiation - an example is given of someone addicted to devilweed (low addiction) on first use. The user must make a Fort save every day or take 1d2 Wisdom damage. As long as he smokes devilweed every 10 days, the DC is only 6. If he stops, then the DC increases to 11. If he starts again, the DC drops back to 6.

From that, the character has to save every day or take damage (or use the drug every day).

Those are some harsh rules, ain't they?
