Book related settings

Also in French there's a hardcover half-size book called le "Guide des Cités" which describes the world of the Obscure Cities in great detail. Although not a supplement per se, it is an excellent world-resource...

I have its German translation.

(I've becoming increasingly convinced that choosing Latin over French as my secondary foreign language was the biggest mistake of my life...)

Yeah after trying to decipher all the amazing looking French RPGS I've seen on the net I tend to agree with you (thank heaven for Babelfish:))

as to book-settings

the Colonial America of Orson Scott Cards Alvin Maker series

Prydain would be another

George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire", of course.

Wies and Hickmans "Deathgate Cycle".

Mercedes Lackey's "Velgarth", where she sets most of her fantasy books.

Dragaera (sp?) from Steven Brust. You know, the Vlad Taltos setting. How many different Dragaeran humanoids are there? Plus, at least 2 types of magic.

How about:

David Drake's Kingdom of the Isles

Modesitt's Recluce

Saberhagen's Changeling Earth (setting for the "Swords" books)

Niven's prehistoric Earth (setting for The Magic Goes Away and The Magic May Return)

Lankhmar 3E!

Donaldson's Mordant (from The Mirror of Her Dreams/A Man Rides Through/Mordant's Need)

Not a 'book' but I'd love to see the Crossgen comic universe come out as a d20 setting.

I'd also love to see Midkemia, would be interesting to see its alternate magic system

In the more general scope of fantasy-literature made into RPGs, I have a lot of misgivings on the whole concept. I'm not sure it ever works well. Most of the time; it is either not failthful enough to be convincing, or so faithful it becomes anal.

Yeah. Not being faithful enough is a problem...now being too faithful, I dont think I've ever come across that problem.

Pretty amazing to me that of your initial list of 20 settings, not one would be on my off-the-top-of-my-head list. Guess it just goes to show that there is a lot of material out there... that, and demonstrating the old "different strokes" adage.

Here are the book settings I would like (love!) to see d20 conversions for (no particular order):

- Black Company, by Glen Cook
- Dune, by Frank Herbert
- Gor, by John Norman
- Thieves World, by Aspirin, Abbey, et al.

Cheers,

-War Golem
