Book to customize the Paladin

What type of religious setup does the BotR Got going? I need to come up with SOME pantheon for my new campaign, but I am really hesitant about spending a $40 bucks when I have So Many Books.

In Book of the Righteous, you get a complete pantheon of over 20 gods, mostly good and some evil. With each god, you get a description of their place in the mythology (and it has a very mythological feel), their relationship to the other gods, and a throrough description of their churches, including titles, structure, core beliefs, and religious laws.

Each god has 3 holy orders: the cleric, the holy warrior, and a prestige class for each god. It's interesting that the prestige classes are generally NOT designed for the clerics or holy warriors. The god of magic has an archmage type prestige class; the god of travel has a messenger/courier prestige class that works best for rangers or rogues, and so on. The prestige classes are very well done; interesting, lots of abilities but not overly powerful.

There's roughly 10 pages of material for each god, and NO stats for the gods or their avatars. These gods are a bit more aloof than, say, the deities of the Realms. For example, for Terak, the god of war and valor, there are two schools of thought with regards to his alignment; some see him as lawful good, while others see him as lawful neutral. I thought that was a nice touch; gods are not completely known to man, but rather shaped to suit the purposes of the church.

The pantheon is heavily slanted towards player use, with good and neutral deities. There are only 4 evil deities, who are there primarily for DM use.

If you've got any other questions, Xarlen, just ask.

This sounds Very Sweet.

My campaign is sort've a splash of LotR/Scarred Lands.

I'm taking an aspect of Small Gods and Princess Mononoke, to give the idea that the Gods are very powerful spirits who got a LOT of believers.

My only prob is the friggin' PRICE of this book. And I'd likely just use the God information. :(

Call of Duty is a great Paladin sourcebook PDF, but offers less in terms of customization than the above. It lets you swap out Paladin abilities for others, like giving up spells for more smites. It also presents the Paladin as a PrC option, which none of the above do.

Also, note that Book of Hallowed Might and Call of Duty are currently only available as PDFs, and are much, much cheaper than the Book of the Righteous. I think BoHM is $7, CoD is $5, and BotR is around $40.

Actually Call of Duty is $7.00. It is a 64 page PDF on rpgnow.com. More details including a preview and tons of links to reviews here: http://www.chainmailbikini.com/products/callofduty.html .

The book does not deal with "paladins of other alignments", but it does have paladin-like prestige classes of other alignments, and some guidlelines for alignment "tilts" which are really just recommendations on playing paladins of lawful neutral or neutral good tendencies. But really, in our opinion, if it ain't lawful good, it ain't a paladin. :)

I was a bit hesitant before purchasing it. Yet I don't regret a single Euro even though I'm not going to use any of the material straight off.

If you haven't got a patheon, you're most likely to want to use it straight away. It's that good.

You say you're only likely to use the gods, but that's at least 4/5 of the book, so you're not going to be ripped off or anything.

I don't have any financial interest in you buying it, just saying it's great. Maybe you can find it second hand somewhere...
