Boosting saves to prevent permanent level drain?

I would never let anyone use the 'one minute before boost' for something like this.

The save at the end of 24 hours represents an entire day of trying to fight off the efffects of the level drain. The negative energy doesn't just whomp you and then wait around watching the clock until exactly 24 hours have passed - it's in you, eating away at your life force for that entire day while you try to fight it off. Some poxy +1 at the last moment isn't going to help of the negative energy has been smacking you around like a red-headed stepchild all day - it's too little, too late.

IMO, only bonuses (or penalties!) that apply to most of the period of time that the save covers should be counted.

And I agree about allowing a Barbarian to rage AFTER the first save is made..... (yes levels were lost over 4 rounds).

Mialee: (Checks watch) Okay, Krusk the poison should be hitting you again in about 10 seconds. Already... wait for it, okay rage!!

Krusk: RAAAAAAAARRRR!!

Mialee: Good Krusk, good. Just a few more seconds, alright. Phew, good job Krusk you just flushed that poison right from your system!!

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

NO NO NO!

If you get hit with energy drain, you do NOT make the save until 24 hours later, PERIOD. This is IN THE RULES. Any other interpretation is house rules and does NOT belong here in this forum.

Also, items that boost saves work IMMEDIATELY. So if the person in question put on a Cloak of Resistance +5 opne hour before the save needs to be made, he STILL GETS THE BONUS.

This is a RULES question, and the book makes this QUITE CLEAR.

And yet you do not get extra skill points for casting Fox's Cunning immediately before levelling - even though the spell works IMMEDIATELY.

There is a lot of overlap between this forum and the house rules forum, especially in cases where the rules are unclear or contradictory. There is no call to get rude and begin shouting.

Yes, you can cast spells and use items to boost the save you have to make 24 hours later-to say you can't is a houserule. They even point this out and give you ideas on how to do it in one of the first Dragon Mags covering 3E. Pretty sure under one the Power play articles.

So you can put on that Cloak of Resistance, cast Endurance, the hour(or minute-whatever) of the save and you get all the bonus's for the save-you DO NOT have to wait or have the spells in effect for the previous 24hrs.

As to trying to guess then exact minute you had to make the save-well thats up to how you run you game, alot of Dm's I know just assume you know. If your Dm says you don't know the exact time you have to save well its his call.

WotC has stated the Bonus Skill points for Intelligence are a seperate and unique issue, if you had a +4 Int item or spell in effect for MOST of the last level you get the extra Skill points, otherwise not.

This however is not the standard for Enhancement spells.

Otherwise what? Do you make people have to have had Bull's Str and Cats Grace up for 24hr's before they get the benefit ?.

Dragon issue #286, the Vs Vampires Article written by Bruce Cordell, has the block about purging negative levels 24 hours later and give examples how to boost you save-with spells like Endurance, Guidance, Prayer and magic Circle against evil ect...
