Boots of Flying

How is the price for this item figured? It is a command-word spell, but only works for 2 hours a day and costs 12000 gp. I can't figure out how they adjusted the price (same is true with wings of flying, these have even greater restrictions).
How much would command-word activated boots of flying (unlimited time per day, as long as I keep activating them again) cost? According to the guidelines, I think it would be 30000 gp, but boots and wings are adjusted in price as far as I can tell...

Wow, that was fast :)

Any clue as to how they're adjusted? I'd like my sorcerer to fly more than 2 hours per day, if possible... :-/

They're playtested until it just works out. :p

As a DM, I'd let a player make unlimited boots of flying for double their standard cost; a little more than the difference between fly and Extended fly. I don't really see any potential for abuse.

I think I'll try to go with the standard guidelines. After all, 30k gp is not pocket change...

I don't really see the problem, though. I mean, the increase in price cannot be because of the power combo of Fly+Improved Invis mage (which to me is utterly boring) because mages can already do it without an item... Was Monte Cook afraid of flying fighters or something? Both items that grant Fly are very restrictive: either it is a limited duration (2 hours per day) or even greater restrictions (wings of flying grow to 20 ft. span). I don't see why this has to be so. If flight overpowered?

Consider a flying spring attacker. Fly down, with a hefty power attack and higher ground bonus, swing, then retreat out of reach. Unless the defender is a good archer, or can fly himself, he's out of luck. And with the 90' flying movement, the flier can still charge someone who's running.

And that's not to mention what a flyer will do outside of combat to circumvent normal problems...

Using the special mounts rule in Defenders of the Faith, paladins can get unicorns at 6th level, but have to wait until 7th level to get a pegasus. Except for the flying ability, unicorns are definitely better (better combat abilities, more hit points, more spell-like abilities). But flying is enough to put the pegasus over the unicorn (even though they're both CR 3).

Unlimited flight is a powerful ability for PCs, both in combat and for travel. It shouldn't be available to low-level PCs.

I seem to recall a preposterously overpowered item that granted fly... unlike all the others, it granted an unlimited fly and hardly cost anything.

<looks through SRD>

Wings of Flying: A pair of these wings might appear to be nothing more than a plain cloak of old, black cloth, or they could be as elegant as a long cape of blue feathers. When the wearer speaks the command word, the cloak turns into a pair of gigantic wings (bat or bird, 20-foot span) and empower her to fly as with a fly spell.

Caster Level: 5th; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, fly; Market Price: 5,500 gp; Weight: 2 lb.

Unless I've forgotten something, those are what I was thinking of.

Mentioned above... 20-foot wingspan.
