Boots of Levitation

Ring of Invisibility is slightly different as its use activated, not command word. However boots of levitation are worded such that they give exactly the same result as you casting the spell on yourself. As such there's no reason for the magic to fade when you remove the boots, until the duration runs out. Of course the 3 minute duration makes this somewhat impractical. Unless you decide thats too 'clunky' and decide that it should just last forever. In which case you need to make another dubious ruling about the magic fading as soon as you remove the item... and yet your 2 dubious rulings are less 'clunky' than my 1 common sense ruling ?

Really, whats the downside of admitting that boots of levitation only last 3 minutes per activation, and then promptly forgetting about it ? Why the need to rewrite the rules for something that probably will never make one lick of difference in actual gameplay?

I do believe that you're the one rewriting the rules, introducing timed durations into magic items where none are given.

As another detail, note that the ring invisibility does specify a need to activate it, and it says "as the spell" exactly like the boots do:

Invisibility
By activating this ring, the wearer can become invisible, as the spell.
Caster Level: 3rd; Prerequisites: Forge Ring, invisibility; Market Price: 20,000 gp.

And in fact in the DMG it's given as the specific example of the following under "use-activated" items:

Continually functioning items are practically always items that one wears. A few must simply be in the character’s possession. Some items made for wearing must still be activated. Although this activation sometimes requires a command word, usually it means mentally willing the activation to happen.

I always presumed the activation was just putting the ring on, but according to you it must be something different, "as the spell".

Well, you're wrong, then. Because the ring does specify a need to activate it.

Activation: Usually, a ring’s ability is activated by a command word (a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity) or it works continually. Some rings have exceptional activation methods, according to their descriptions.

Faint illusion; CL 3rd; Forge Ring, invisibility; Price 20,000 gp.

So, activating a Ring of Invisibility is a standard action that does not provoke an AoO because the description doesn't say otherwise, and it allows you to benefit from invisibility, as the spell. Let's see, at caster level 3, that means:

Wow.

That looks an awful lot like the boots you're arguing against, eh, dcollins?
