Inspired by a question in the Book of Exalted Deeds thread, I too wonder how many people that liked the Book of Vile Darkness but don't like the BoED, and vice versa.

I like 'em both.

I was given BoVD and feel a bit odd about it. I have yet to use any portion of it in my games; then again, I don't deal with planes, don't have gods with hit points, and don't feel there is a need for rules regarding alignment (having dropped alignment in my games), so I am obviously not the target audience.

That & I found some of the pictures unnecessarily gross.

Flipped through BoED. See no need for it. Doesn't fit my campaigning style

I know other people the books would work well for, however, and I certainly would not turn away from a game that used either supplement.

Therefore I put myself down as "Ambivalent"

My copy of BoED only arrived today, so I'm far from finished reading it. A quick scan and reading of certain things did let me know that I like the book, but as with the BoVD I don't know how often I'll use it. I like some of the feats and spells, a couple of the PrCs look really interesting.

I've only thumbed through the BoED, but like what I've seen.

I own, and like, the BoVD. Not as a PC resource, but because of the nature of my games.

I don't think I've ever had a game leave the Prime plane and the transitive planes (mainly ethereal and shadow). Still, I tend to use a theme of Hellish embodiments of evil, usually corrupters. There's a lot of gray where humanity, and even things like orcs are concerned. I use that, but I also throw some "undeniable evils" at the PCs, too.

BoVD gives me some mechanics to make those embodiments and their devoted followers feel a bit different, a bit alien.

It's like they scratched out the word "evil" and put in the word "good" on what would otherwise be exactly the same book.

The BoVD made too many things Evil. That was annoying (as written, in 3rd edition, the forces of Good could no longer remove Unhallow if you used the optional [evil] spell tags from that book). The BoED holds Good to a standard that I think is kind of stupid.

I mean, Good is about making things better for everyone. That includes you. That's the whole point. That the BoED seems to undermine that in favor of the whole Christian self-sacrifice thing is - to put it mildly - dissappointing.

Stamping "Evil" on a bunch of normal stuff is way easier to ignore than defining Good as a self-destructive tailspin.

It's funny, really. I am unsure how to cast my vote here. I would have bought the Book of VD were it not for the artwork. Too hokey and over-the-top for my taste. I have a three year old, so recognize when people are pushing the boundaries just for the sake of testing them out to see how far they can go before someone says, "Stop that." So far as the Book of ED is concerned, I gave it a brief skimming at the LGS and nothing really caught my eye. I guess ambivalence is the best descriptor on the poll, but really, I'm not ambivalent. I need to give the Book of ED a closer look to decide if what it contains would see any use at my gaming table.

The self-sacrifice thing is a lot more widespread than just "Christian".

I love the BoVD. I have glanced at the BoED, but I haven't yet picked it up.. prolly will eventually, but while the BoVD instantly grabbed me and shook me and roared, "BUY ME NOW!" the BoED kinda glanced shyly my way and asked if I liked it.

Eh.

I'll vote once I get a closer look at it...
