Brainstorming a M:tG themed campaign...

Generally speaking, I'm letting people make PCs in much the same way as you would in a typical Fantasy HERO game- if you can think of it, and you have the build points for it, you can do it.

The campaign-specific rules will affect that, of course.

As for owning the cards, well...not too much of an issue there, since most of the guys in the group are M:tG tournament vets. But I'm not going to require they have them- I'm not even restricting them to actual M:tG cards. I will just restrict new spells to using mana appropriate to the setting's overall rules. IOW, if someone makes a necromatic type spell not reflected by an actual card, it will have to use Black mana.

Artifacts will be worn or carried, much as you'd expect. As per usual in FantHERO, using something short-term doesn't cost points, but holding onto it for use does. So something like the Sol Ring wouldn't cost a PC build points unless he decided to actually add it to his inventory of gear.

Great ideas. Especially about the familiars.

Elements in Arabic

Fire - Na'ar
Water - Maya
Wind - Reeh
Earth - Ard

Depends on what you want for black tho

Hmm...I like Maya and Ard, but the others just don't sing to me. Still, I'll keep them in mind: I'm thinking I might use a few names for each type, basted on cultures/languages in the world.

Anybody know of translators for Elvish, Dwarven or Klingon? Other sci-fi/fantasy races?

hmm
your making me want to stat out a hero character.
I used to make them for fun. I just didn't like the way the game played.
anyway with HERO rules your better off starting high powered, its not really a zero to hero kind of system. I would be inclined to build a deck first, then base a character on it.
15 land (ignored)
15 creatures (4 types, 2-3 common)
15 spells/artifacts (4 types, 2-3 common)
- the problem is that heroes normally have 1-3 attacks and 1 sets of constant defenses.

Do you have a rule of thumb on how to represent a summoned creature as a power?

What about a multi-power framework...
Active cost 50
Shivan Dragon: 10d6 or +16 PD/ED resistant

Klingon

Fire - qul
Water - bIQ
Wind - SuS

No idea what earth is, as mostly in tlhIngan Hol it only refers to earth as the planet.

Sindarin

Fire - Nar
Water - Nen
Wind - Sûl

Quenya

Earth - Kemen

Khuzdul, the Dwarven language, has never really been developed.

One idea, how about allowing useful creatures to be familiars for the players?

Example, Birds of Paradise:

I was wondering if you had any ideas as to other possible familiars besides BoP?

I want to provide a list of options for each color- and artifacts- already statted out, but haven't had a chance to look closely. I want familiars to cost 0-1 converted mana cost- though "improved familiars" may be something I explore down the road- and not have any über-funky mechanics. IOW, no Phyrexian Marauder.

I figure Will 'O' Wisp is a good one for Black. Maybe something like the Ornithopter and Phyrexian Walker artifacts. I can see a Thallid that creates Saprolings. Birds, Homarids and Thrulls have possibilities. Cloud sprites...Entrails Feaster...

I think Red & White will be the tough ones, though I have found the Forge Devil and Goldenglow Moth.

Assuming familiar doesn't have to mean small sized animal...but more of a follower/hireling of some sort.

White: Any sort of squire, shield-bearer, medic, or low level traditional "white weenie".

Blue: Merfolk, small flying creatures of many sorts.

Green: Elves of many natures, saprolings

Black: Skeleton, zombie, thrull

Red: Goblin all the way

DS

Note: My knowledge of magic stopped growing after the farce that was Homelands...

I think I want to keep "Familiars" and "Followers/Hirelings" as distinct groups, but I think you've got something with the skeletons & other smallish undead. There may be an imp or lemure that could work, too.

Rats! There are always rats! :D
Yep, yep! But not all of them will be suitable- I'll have to do some weeding. I might also have to have a rule stating that spells that summon rats that change all rats in play must also require their caster have a rat familiar.
