I'm contemplating running a new game some time in the near future. My basic idea for a game is a supers game set in Renaissance-era Europe. Obviously, this is an inspiration drawn from Neil Gaiman's excellent 1602, a comic about the Marvel X-Men showing up in England in the past.
I've got some nifty ideas for what's going on, and I'm trying to figure out a plot to go around it. Any help or suggestions anyone would care to offer on the following would be most appreciated.
The essential idea I have is that the super's powers are coming from discorporated celestial spirits, either angelic or fiendish in nature. Something bad happened to the world (either on Earth or the Other Side), and all the celestials on Earth were ripped apart, unable to keep their form. As a result, they discoporated, and were forced to join with infants who were still in the womb to survive. As these infants were born, they were changed by the celestial essence embedded in them. The kids grew up, and as they did, they manifested unusual abilities, like mutants in the X-Men. Some looked freakish; some looked normal, but all had special powers.
As a result of the lack of celestial influence, things on Earth start falling apart. Unnatural events wrack the land, and strange creatures are wandering near and far. People obviously start to panic, and they think the world is ending - because, well, it is.
Advance the timeline about twenty years. The celestial-born infants are adults, in full command of their powers, though ignorant as to the source of them. People are afraid, and things still are going badly. The laws of nature are starting to break down, so magic is easier than ever, though dangerous. The world has spasmed with war and rioting in the wake of all these changes, as fear has spread like wildfire.
Okay. That's the basics of the setting I want to do. Now, the things I'd like suggestions on.
First of all, I'm having trouble coming up with what caused all this. Someone trying to end the world? Has God decided the End Times are here? Who would benefit from this, if the destruction of the celestials was even their intent?
Second, what kind of campaigns would be interesting in such a setting? I've never done a supers game before, so I'm curious as to any suggestions anyone might have.
As I said, any suggestions or questions anyone might have would be most appreciated.
