If there's been a previous discussion about this (where the text was declared a holdover perhaps?) could someone point me at that?

Actually it's the other way around. 3.5 changed golem immunity while in 3rd edition golems are literally magic immune. None of this "melf's acid arrow" hurting golems in 3rd edition.
