Brewing Potions

Was there ever an addendum for Brew Potion? It seems like a very high time price at an entire day to brew a single potion. Does this mean 8 hours where nothing else can be done? Can the player also do other light work?

Also is the cost for brew potion 25gp per level times caster level or 50gp per level times caster level? I have been told both.

Brew Potion [Item Creation]
Prerequisite: Spellcaster level 3rd+.
Benefit: The character can create a potion of any spell of 3rd level or lower that the character knows and that targets a creature or creatures. Brewing a potion takes 1 day. When the character creates a potion, the character sets the caster level. The caster level must be sufficient to cast the spell in question and no higher than the character's own level. The base price of a potion is its spell level multiplied by its caster level multiplied by 50 gp. To brew a potion, the character must spend 1/25 of this base price in XP and use up raw materials costing half this base price. When the character creates a potion, the character makes any choices that the character would normally make when casting the spell. Whoever drinks the potion is the target of the spell. Any potion that stores a spell with a costly material component or an XP cost also carries a commensurate cost. In addition to the costs derived from the base price, the character must expend the material component or pay the XP when creating the potion.

As for the time thing, I can't help you. Seems right to me. All that time mixing liquids and what not. YMMV :)

That is what I have as well. I have several people swearing up and down though that the cost is 25 gp per level per caster level instead of 50 gp.

So I was wondering if there was some errata somewhere that I do not know about.

They were probably thinking of scrolls.

For what it's worth (i.e. not much), we opted for a house rule that lets you brew Int Bonus # of potions per day, provided that they are all the same type of potion (you brew a bigger batch in the same pot) and that the total GP cost is 1,000 GP or less.

Perhaps they're thinking of the base materials cost for the brewer? That's half the base value ...

The 50 g.p. per spell level per caster level matches the costs in the DMG, and these were not changed in the errata. So, the 'several people' can swear all they want, but ... actually, that didn't quite come out like I intended. Or the 'brewer' reference in the previous paragraph. I think I'll just go back to drinking heavily now. :D

That reminds me, I need to stock up on beer for this weekend's game.

I would guess that the rules are set at 1/day so that potions could only be made during downtime. The Master Alchemist from the FRCS can make multiple potions per day and can eventually make potions of spells up to 9th level. Since it's a pretty open subject (read: little info) it's a perfect subject for house & DM rulings. You could always ask the Sage and wait weeks for a possibly corny answer. :p
