Brian Blume

But also I think a lot of us want to find out about the nuances that make them different.
Oh, and I'm "a lot of us", too! I'm dying to find out if you can track him down and what he says and everything. Keep us posted...
I do not doubt you.
I hope I didn't come across all dictatorial and superior. It was not my intent. You mentioned you hadn't read Corum and I just wanted to assure you that the similarities were indeed strong.

Good luck Blume hunting!

I thought I'd also mention that the eye had powers, the hand had powers, and the eye and hand together had a special power.

The hand could look out for the health of its host, and it also had supernatural strength. At one point in the book, Corum was about to drink poisoned wine, and the hand threw the cup down, then grabbed the poisoner by the throat and strangled him.

The eye could see into another dimension, and it also allowed him to see normally (if he put a special patch over it). The hand could summon the creatures he saw, and (presumably) compel them to aid him.

Also, both items were rendered useless in the actual presence of their former owners.

Well, I called Brian Blume

Based on a listing for a Brian Blume in Lake Geneva provided by a message board, I placed a call to the number given. I was greeted by the voice of an answering machine stateing that all calls to the number are screened. I gave my name, explained the purpose of my call and left my email address. If it was him, it is up to him to contact me.

The eye of Rhynn was multifaceted, like the eye of an insect. I'm wondering if the "glitter like the eye of a feline" part of the description is consciously based on that.

Could be....

I think the Vecna/Kas story is a pretty obvious take-off from Moorcock's Corum and Elric books. If you haven't read them, I'll post more details on why. They're a good read, though--I recommend them.

Jester, you have obviously not been to my web site yet... ;)

Keep us in the loop, Aaron!

I could be mistaken here but...

Regardless of who invented Vecna in the first place.
The Vecna we know of today was forged by events created by the writers of Vecna Lives and Die Vecna Die. David "Zeb" Cook and Bruce R Cordell. They might be the ones to contact.

PS: I recognise GYGAX as the god of this game and he says the Blumes are not nice people so i believe him.

.
Unless you are just kicking off a 1e AD&D Greyhawk game, like I did a few weeks ago, and none of the 2E stuff has been evaluated for inclusion yet.

I'm interested in what Blume has to say, as I feel completely unobligated to take the Cook/Cordell stuff into account.

EDIT: Duh! Guess he never got back to him.......

Old thread?!
I'll say.

I never heard back from the guy. As far as I can tell, hand and eye are copied in part from Corum and have a few extra/different powers. I actually like the Corum ones better and add those abilities to the hand and eye of Vecna.

Looking at the EW materials, and the 1eDMG, It seems that the eye and hand of Vecna were all that remained of the guy, with the eye and sword of Kas having the posibility of not even originating with Vecna.

Also I get the distinct impression that Vecna originally was a powerful wraith that wandered the world, his only remains being the eye and hand. Using the eye and hand gave that wraith the power to possess the user, until that person was destroyed, and then it was back to wraithing.

Aaron.
