Bring back the ol sword of sharpness and the terrifying vorpal sword. Those were a hoot to have around. Cut off a monsters head on a role of a 19 or 20. What could be better then that? A great weapon, good as the fantastic holy avenger in the hands of a paladin. Or a trombone in the hands of a bard.

I had one very high level 3e campaign that went a bit nuts with vorpal weapons, expanded crit ranges, and fortified armor.

heh I don't have a problem with this. I don't think I ever came across a villian that had a vorpal thinger. In DD1rst King Arthur's Excalibur was one I think. Good and nasty.

IN 4e I have a paragon tier sword of sharpness enchantment that I put in as a house rule/ item.


+3 enchantment heavy blades and axes.

prperty if you roll a 19 or 20 to hit you add 1d6 extra damage (max on that 20)

daily power: activate when you crit a bloodied target, target takes ongoing 15 (save ends) and a -2 to attack until the end of it's next extended rest.

at +4 make it 2d6
at +5 18, 19 0r 20
at +6 3d6

the crit mod is 2d4 per plus

I'll have to dig up the old rules on them. Vorpal was worse than sharpness I think. It's best to keep in mind that these nasty weapons are OK to have in the game. Just don't hand them out by the buckets to orks and goblins. I never ran across one and I can't think of a TSR module that had one in it. Their scary as hell!

Vorpal cut off the head, sharpness could cut off every limb BUT the head.

If other save-or-dies will be in the game, I think vorpal should come back as well. Just remember, creatures will have them too. Remember the quillion (and the githyanki silver sword) with it's sharpness blade? Or that the tarrasque's bite was vorpal?

Personally though, I'd like to minimize save-or-dies. Perhaps make vorpal a x5 crit.
