Bringing Fantasy Worlds to Modern...What's Old is New Again

I see some elves sticking to the Bow and the Longsword, and keeping up the traditions of bladesinger, arcane archer, spellsinger, and high mage. But I can also see elves adapting to the new weapons, them being more powerful (but I think they would incorporate magic into the whole design, to further increase accuracy, damage and utility).

The "Race to the Planes" could replace our "Race into Space", or we could have both.

Eventually, the white spots on the maps would vanish. I can also see the drow better integrated into the new multi-racial society, maybe even living on the surface (helped by the surface settlement programs of both Vhaeraun and Eilistraee), as would other outcast races. The hatred between races would fade, or would be conducted "more civilized". Still, because of the diversity of races, the planet would be settled more complete than possible on earth: we'd have full settlement on the surface, below the surface of the continents, and even below the surface of the oceans. I think the arial races would create bigger cities on high-altitude locations, maybe even new flying cities.

Amusing. I've just started a modern day version of the Forgotten Realms on the PBP board here at ENWorld.

Thankfully, I've avoided the 'elves are eco-terrorists' cliche. Instead, I looked at elves from a modern day perspective and realized that with their lifespan - the elves would be the movers and the shakers of the modern age. The elves are the elite rich; the Rockefellers and Hearsts, the Gates and the Willowbrooks (err, that last one is from the game). There are those elves who still feel their connection to the earth - rather than try and destroy the tractors that are destroying the rain forest, they take one of two paths - the political (the Green Party is more powerful in this world) or the scientific/arcane (trying to devise means for plants and trees to repair or protect themselves from the depredations of man). And being of a 'dying race' isn't as much an issue - science is good for some things after all.

The dwarves have embraced technology, and become software engineers without peer. Not to mention superb aerospace designers, mechanics, etc etc.

I'm still looking for an additional player, by the way. (hint, hint)

Actually, this is an idea I think a lot of D&D DMs could use to get their players interested in the d20 Modern game.

The weekend after d20 Modern came out on Friday (here in TN, anyways), I ran my first game. I was "guest GMing" my brother's normal game because I'd had this killer idea. His game was currently in Ravenloft (though it started out as a FR game and went back to that after a while on the demiplane) and so rather than having them roll up new characters and so forth I simply teleported them to my d20 Modern setting: Raven City.

Raven City is, of course, Ravenloft d20 Modern. It's sort of a takeoff on the Dark City concept, where this massive urbanized city is completely cut off from everything else. There is nothing beyond the edge. Likewise, it's divided into zones protected by electric fences and hi-tech security. The players' weapons transformed into firearms, the drow villain became the CEO of a megacorporation, while his half-orc bodyguard transformed from soldier to Secret Service-style bodyguard, complete with tailored suit and earpiece. It was just a one-shot so I didn't get into the details of the city too much, but the players all had a blast.

Yes. Anyone else like to join? 'Tis a very good idea for a game.

A 'race to the planes' would be quite cool, as in most settings, a 'race into space' would probably end with a crash on the crystal sphere. If there were other inhabitable worlds in the system, of course, especially ones with all the standard races on them, it could make for very interesting events. Imagine a world in the middle-ages' surprise as giant spaceships filled with advanced people of every race descend from the skies!

Regarding Humanoids, having them become civilized is a nice change, and for things related to that, one should probably read the first two IRs (but the Industrial Revolution archive appears to be down, presently).
