Buccaneers of Freeport

Has anyone used this product? Some of the pirates are duplicated from Freeport: City of Adventure, so is that a rip-off or a valuable expansion on them. Has anyone reviewed this, anywhere? (My google-fu has failed me.) Do we get deck plans with this product? Plots?

I have the PDF (print version isn't out yet). It's only been out a couple of weeks and I haven't seen any reviews so far. I do recommend it. It's got lots of good stuff and definitely adds more piratey goodness to Freeport. The couple characters from previous books get a lot more attention. Each buccanner gets like 15 pages, so there's plenty of expansion. There are details on the crew, deck plans for each buccaneer's ship, and a big plot synopsis for a adventure. So yeah, lots of info and plenty to exploit in a Freeport campaign.

Nice!

I think the big question, though, will be whether they go with a Pathfinder Freeport Companion or a 4E one (and just let the then-OOP D20 one fill in for Pathfinder).

I was a bit disappointed. We get deck plans. But it's an open system supplement, thus there's no crunch on the NPCs, meaning you have to build them all yourself. And the plots... well, they're a bit useless at times:

"Free from immediate danger, the characters find that something has been hidden on their persons or within their effects. This item might be a key, a map, a magical talisman, or something else. Regardless, someone comes looking for it, and they're not friendly.... The only thing to do, of course is to use their new possession to gain greater leverage against the various forces who are involved, and the only one who knows how to do that is Kimbal himself. Unfortunately, Kimbal fell from one scrape into another, and must be rescued from serpent people, sea devils or some other horrific and inhuman race. Breaking into their lair and breaking out again with Kimbal will take some careful planning and some capable fighting."

That's not the result of being an open system. That's a writer not making choices in crafting a plot.

I like the book. I find the complete lack of stats to be a good thing. It has some weak spots and some great ideas. It was the onlyt gaming book I read at Gen Con.
