 There are two Captain Marvels? I didn't know that. I guess it's time to have a talk with my comic expert friend to get the story on this. He may have mentioned this a few weeks back when he was telling me about Captain Marvel but I don't remember. My mind was too boggled by all the other odd "Marvel" characters like the long lost twin sister.
DC's Captain Marvel? He's a boy named Billy Batson who was granted powers by the gods. All he has to do is shout the magic word: "Shazam!"

Heh. I remembered two 1970's live-action adventure Saturday morning series featuring Shazam and Isis. Though for the likes of me, I can't recall who were the actors and actresses.

There's more than that, actually. Captain Marvel (he of the mighty "Shazam!" phrase), is a DC character, basically a magical Superman. Marvel had it's Kree Captain Mar-Vell, who went on to become a famous hero among the humans of Marvel Earth, and was (posthumously) made an Avenger. The Death of Captain Marvel, wherein he dies of cancer, is one of the most well-loved graphic novels.

Captain Mar-Vell had a son- essentially a test-tube baby of his DNA and a Titanian Eternal's, grown to full size and given artificial memories- who was the most recent person to use the name Captain Marvel. Genis-Vell is currently going by Photon.

Another Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, was also an Avenger. She currently goes by the name Pulsar.

My mind was too boggled by all the other odd "Marvel" characters like the long lost twin sister.

Funnily enough, in the last issues of the recent Captain Marvel comic, it was revealed that Genis-Vell had a long lost twin sister named Phyla. :)

Wasn't Mar-vell resurrected a couple of times too? I can't keep track.

Mar-Vell has only been resurrected in dreamscapes or in Legions of the Unliving (which doesn't really count, as they're still dead). The one time he was actually resurrected as a living being was in a backup story in an issue of Cosmic Powers Unlimited, when his nemesis Thanos used the Reality Gem to resurrect him to ask him some questions. He was sent back into his state of unliving at the end of that.

Mar-Vell has stayed pretty dead in the MU otherwise.

On the topic of killing characters and resurrecting them, that has always been one of the staple conceits of the genre, same with other forms of "pulp" fiction types of stories. I think it is overdone to an extent, and a lot of it happens (seemingly) for "shock" value, but as long ast there is a good story behind it, I say why not?

I always liked that one. My favorite character on the show was the rock-n-roll superhero, can't think of his name.

Whats with all this stuff I'm hearing about Cap's sidekick Bucky being alive and using the name Winter Soldier? Next thing you know Uncle Ben and Captian Marvel will be back too.

We don't know for sure yet what's going on. The implication is that Bucky somehow survived, and was brainwashed by the Russians into becoming a cyborg killer known as the Winter Soldier (I don't think he's been named that in the comic yet, FWIW).

Given that there is a cosmic cube involved, Cap and his partner Jack "Nomad" Monroe both seem to have had their memories messed with, and someone is deliberately playing games with Cap, I'd say it's safe to assume that the story hasn't been told yet.

My guess is: (spoiler because it contains info that someone who hasn't read the story might not yet know)

My personal bet is that the "Winter Soldier" will somehow turn out to be Jack Monroe, despite his seeming death in issue #3, and again in the latest issue (a flashback issue). The two characters look way too much alike, and there is a lot of shadiness involving Jack's memories.

Nah. It was worthy just to see him beat the Joker with a crowbar...

Damn clown needed to be taken down a peg or two. :]

Don't forget that he played a pivotal role in both Universe X and sequel Paradise X (both of which were sequels to Earth X, in which Mar-Vell only showed up at the very end).

There was aalso n excellent issue of the recent Genus/Marvel series that Jim Starlin drew and I believe Peter David wrote that involved the son meeting his father, although they made it very clear that the Mar-Vell in that story was from an alternate reality. So while that wasn't the real deal it was nice to a well-written, Starlin drawn take on the character again (and worked much better as a alt. given that most readers want him to stay dead).

Yeah- I only read Earth X. Couldn't really get into the rest of that series, but in any case that was an alternate MU, and not the mainstream one.
