Buckler Question

First Post
I am not sure if this is the right category. Could be that rules would be better.
I have the following question.
Can a Charachter Wizard 6 / Fighter one use a Buckler when Casting spells?
Is there an arcane Spell Failure involved when usinge an Buckler?
Didnt found any rules concerning this case?
Can someone tell me how this is solved by the Rules?

Thanks.

Yes.

Yes. See the main "Armor and Shields" table. (5%)

Buy a mithral one (+1000 gp) and it'll have no arcane spell failure and no armor check penalty.

Yes to all.

ASF applies to anyone's arcane spells (unless you have a special ability) when wearing armor or using a shield.

Being a multiclassed Fighter gives you proficiency but that doesn't eliminate ASF.

The CM alternate Mage would be a bad choice since his ability to reduce ASF is depending on the Fighter levels.
Since the Char in Question will not take more then one Fighter level Amored Mage isnt the way to go.
I am looking for a way to get a good but Cheap Armor in comparison to Braccer.
Braccers AC 8 Cost 58 K Gold.
Dont have the gold.
Since i need the Fighter Level i am looking for a way to use the Fighter Armor abilities to get a better Armor for my Mage.
Fighter Armors are much Cheaper then Braccers but have ASF.
I know Mithrall Shirt is the way to go.

But i was looking for other options, any suggestions?

I would like celestial Armor since i find this Armor cool but even with Twilight Enhancemant i would still have 5 % ASF.
So the way will be Mithrall Shirt + Twillight and a Mithrall Buckler.

Anyone other suggestions?

Bracers of AC, combined with a Good Mithril Buckler, an Amulet of Natural Armor, a good dex, and you are on your way to a very good AC (with zero spell failure). Maybe instead of Fighter for level dropping, you might take something like Hexblade or Duskblade instead to get a couple of spells and some more appropriate (for a mage who fights) abilities.

Note that if the armor check penalty is zero, you don't need proficiency to use it.

So you could be a straight mage and have a Mithril buckler, with no penalties of any kind (other than the weight for encumbrance purposes).

Ok i thought i need Profiiecency with Shields to use a Buckler.
Mages dont have Shield as an profiecency.

What way i am going.

Wizard 5 atm.
Incantatrix 2
Next level i will take one Level Fighter first because i want that Bonus feat.
Sceond i want the HP and last but not least i want need the bonus on Fort Saves.

My saves are awfull.
From there on i wll take Incantatri straight to the end.
Yes i know it isnt clever to take the Fighter Level because i loose the spell progression.
I dont see another way to accomplish what i want.
So i will have to do the best with the Fighter level i can.

Way to go:

Feats atm.
Spellcasting Prodigy
Iron will
Extend Spell
Energy Substitution
Craft Wand.
Next Level Fighter i take Two Weapon Fighting. /Fighter
Level NineiTwo Wand wielder. /Charchter
Level 10 Energy Admixture / Bonus Incantatrix
Level 12 Twin Spell / Charachter
Level 13 Empower Spell / Bonus Incantatrix.

And then comes the fun.
There are is one BBEG who has a lot too Answer for.

The aim is using Incanattrix Metamagic Trigger on Two Wands for applying Energy Admixture and later Twin Spell to the wands when i get the decrease Metamagic ability of the Inc.

If i somehow can get an Quicken spell into the same round as the 2 Wands the target will have a really bad day.
Didnt figure out how to get the Quicken Spell into the round.
Will take a wand of Lightning and a Wand of Fireball + Acid Admixtrure and Twin Spell :).

Anything wrong with this Idea?

As nittanybone notes, not having the proficiency doesn't mean you can't use it, it just means that you suffer a penalty. (That's a recurring theme in 3E/3.5, compared to prior versions of the rules; in most cases, it's not that you can't do something that you're not proficient with, it's that you take a penalty.)

In the case of shields, that non-proficency penalty means that you apply the shield's armor check penalty to attack rolls, and all skill checks that involve movement.

However, as a mithral buckler has an ACP of -0, it's no big deal to use it non-proficiently.
