Buff in a spell

Question:

What level should a spell be that allows a 1d4+1 enhancement bonus to an attribute (like bull's str, cat's grace, etc.) but the attribute effected is random?

Roll for it.

1 - STR
2 - DEX
3 - CON
4 - INT
5 - WIS
6 - CHA

Well, it depends on the duration. I'd say if it only lasts 1 round/level it might work as a first level spell, but if it's the same long duration as BS, ES, CG, Endurance, etc., 2nd.

This is a wonderful idea for a spell... I would call it second as well.

On another note, let me steal some thunder- what do you think for a spell that rather than adding 2-5 pts to one attribute, adds 1 point to 2 or 3 attributes?

I think how you formulated this spell and how maximize spell is mormulated, applying maximize spell to this one will make it always apply to charisma!

Errrmmmm... I think that is a definately a common sense issue right there.

I agree that 2nd level seems right, but the real question is why would you want it? Existing buff spells raise what you want, when you want it, and with the added spells in TnB, one exists for every attribute.

Maybe if the stat buff was 1d6+1? I put a randomized raise of 1d6+1 as a second level spell, especially compared to the existing buffs. Still nto sure why I'd want to learn it, or cast it...

A random spell like that would be interesting on an alternate Chaos, Insanity, or Madness sort of domain list.

Can't think of many other reasons for it.

Adding only 1 point to an attribute is a bad idea; given that stat modifiers go up with every 2 points in the attribute, this means that the spell has a pure either/or effect; some people will gain a benefit, while some won't get anything. So it should add a flat 2 points to each attribute affected.

I wrote up a clerical spell for nemmerle's Aquerra campaign that gave a +2 bonus to Strength, Constitution and Wisdom to the caster. This seemed best as a 4th level spell, since the Wisdom bonus is always good for a cleric. In retrospect, it might be a tad weak for 4th, but seems better than 3rd. Reducing duration to 10 minutes/level or 1 minute/level might balance it at 3rd, while a duration of 2 hours/level would make it a better deal at 4th. Or something like that. :)

Oddly enough there's a second level spell in d20 modern that increases any stat you want by +5. The difference is it only lasts 1 minute per level.
