(Buffy/Highlander) First Evil/ Arihman

Crothian

First Post
Well, since Buffy has come to an end with the whole First Evil thought it occured to me that we had seen this all before in Highlander. At the end of season 5 Duncan faced of against the god Arihman and Arihman seems very similiar to the First Evil. Both don't seem to be able to directly effect this world. Arihman was able to take possession of people, but not too often and not too long. Both enjoyed impersonating dead people. They seemed to thrive on mis information and illusion.

Now, it's not a perfect match as they were defeated in completely different ways. But it was just one of those things that seemed a little to similiar.

Duncan channelled peace and Arihman went bye-bye. (Which makes sense. Arihman is a spirit. Not exactly an easy thing to fight.)

Ahriman is the Zoroastrian Satan. I think I've seen a poster on the boards use an alternate of his name as well (Angra Mainyu). Stupid me, I watched Highlander faithfully all the way from season 1 through the Four Horseman arc and part of the Dark Quickening, then I forgot to watch the darn finale episodes. They're on DVD by now I assume?

More accurately, Satan is the Judeo-Christian Ahriman. Ahriman came first.

Well speaking accurately, they're not equivalent at all. In the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition Satan is made by God and is the catalyst for one of the two versions of the fall. In Zoroastrianism Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu made the world together, and which would win out in the end, good or evil, wasn't predetermined; none of which has anything to do with Highlander, which did little more than borrow the name. Since the frame of referrence is the J-C-I tradition though, protocol says we relate to, not from. Just one of those things.

Well, the Dark Quickening came before the 4 horsemen. The Arihman 3 episodes came shortly after the 4 horse man (the first was the last episode of season 5, then the first 2 episodes of season 6). The first season is out on DVD and as far as I've seen the others haven't made it yet.
