I didn't even get the impression that the apologist bits were in Abrams's hands, more like they were mandated in the manner of a corporate retraction. But yeah, the rest is such a mess, and neither the parts nor the whole made much sense.

From Abrams own statements it's abundantly clear that stuff like "No I'm a Palpatine actually see I'm important because I'm genetically related to a historically important person, that's how the world works!" was all Abrams, so I think it is squarely on him.
