building a medieval world.

I am going through the adventures of The Travels of Sir John Mandeville, to figure out how to build a medieval world.
Any other good sources or pics to draw on or what would you expect in such a world?

There are many great books written by historians and easy enough to Google.
But don’t leave it there if you are in Europe; visit a castle, particularly one adjacent to a cathedral, and get a “feel” of medieval thought and experience. Colin Morris described them as “ power, writ in stone” and you can gain real insight to their lives.
Rochester is my personal favourite as it is local to me, both were built by Bishop Gundulf ( whose name may have inspired a certain grey wizard), it controlled the river Medway which transported iron ore to London from the Weald, and sat upon the old Roman road from London to Canterbury, allowing the King to access the Archbishop.

You might want to decide what era and region to focus on. The Middle Ages lasted a thousand years, and no matter what the schoolbooks used to say, time did not stand still. Social structures, economies, politics, religious practices, notions, world views, values, knowledge and tolerances changed all the time. And assuming you're talking about Medieval Europe, all those factors changed from one region to the next. England was not the same as the Ottoman-controlled Balcan, or Viking Scandinavia, or the Holy Roman Empire, or the Iberian Peninsula.
