Building a NPC Wizard that flys a wyvern

First Post
OK, by next session I need to finish building a wizard NPC (level 6 probably) that flys a wyvern.

I was wondering how to build it, in particular what skills and feats it should have.

I already asked in this thread about the rules for casting spells on a flying mount.

Has anyone every considered a need for a 'flying mount combat' feat that would allow a character to use a flying mount? Or should this ability be covered by the ride skill?

Also, of a character rides a wyvern, I assume since a wyvern is intelligent the handle animal skill is not necessary.

Anyway, I assume that good skills to give are Ride and concentration, and feats would be mounted combat and combat casting.

Would mounted archery apply to spells with a ranged touch attack?

Look at the Zhentarium Sky Mage PrC (FR, Lords of Darkness, also 2002 GenCon Preview).

In all, it appears to be covered by the Ride skill (or in this instance, possibly more specifically the PrC, depending on your interp).

Also, I wouldn't be too sure to say Handle Animal was unnecessary, as least to me, it's about more than simply 'training the animal'. Although those applications typically just simply don't apply if the creature lacks the Animal type.

In any event, look at the Skymage PrC, it feels alot like what you want :).

I would think that the wizard would need to be at least 9th level to have Charm Monster'd the wyvern, otherwise it just isn't a suitable mount. The DMG says as much (although it mentions dominate monster, which is probably a tad too high a level spell!)

Cheers

Is it possible the wyvern willingly serves?

Why not?

He could have hand reared it, not sure how long wyverns live, but if he was of a long lived race?

Possibly saved it from some trap or hunting party?

Even bought a trained and broken one from Honest Bobs 2nd hand Wyvern shop?

I'm not playing FR but that sure looks like something to look at.

Is it possible for a level 6 character to have levels in that class?

Anyone have the link for that?

Alternatively, any suggestions on a weaker flying mount for an evil NPC?

It's possible for a Wizard to have one level in Skymage at 6th.

Trying to find the old links to the Skymage, and it looks like Wizards may have removed it unforunately :(, as it was part of their Virtual GenCon page.

Virtual.gencon.com is EVIL, and I can't find anything there anyway.
