Building an Archer Base Class - Thoughts

Its been something that has been on the burner for a couple years. I've been contemplating giving a poor BAB, but giving it the Flurry of Blows progression for Archery attacks. Thoughts?

This class would need a huge amout of abilites to make up for it.

I would suggest at the least starting with medium BAB. And depending on how you see the class, giving a lot of feats, or giving ranger animal companion and ranger spells.

At this point you don't really have enough to work with. We need more conceputualization specifics and fluff, in order to help.

Personally the best archer is a fighter who takes archery related feats. For 4 feats by level four you have +2 attack and +3 to damage within thirty feet and you can fire twice per round at a -2. Plus you get d10HP and full-plate.

Poor BAB and a flurry progression (assuming it starts at -2/-2 as normal for a monk) sounds like a recipe for archery disaster, unless you can come up with a GREAT way to improve hit chances. I know there's Woodland Archer, where missing a target gives a +4 bonus to subsequent attacks that round. However, that's a +6 BAB tactical feat, so your base class won't be able to access it until 12th level. Heck, almost all of the good higher-level archery feats are higher-level because of their BAB requirements, meaning they will be available WAY too late to be useful.

If I may suggest...

d8 Hit Dice
2 + Int Skills
Good Attack
Rapid Shot is listed as a bonus feat at first level, but otherwise functions like the monks flurry of blows.
Bonus feats at 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 20th (like the Psychic Warrior).
At 10th, 15th and 20th can select a compatible archery related feat and gets the bonus it provides improved in some way. For instance, Point Blank Shot might be improved to +2 attack/damage within 30 ft and +1 attack/damage within 60 ft., Far Shot might make the range increment double for projectile weapons and tripled for thrown, or Precise Shot would just grant Improved Precise Shot.
Lastly, the requirements for bonus feats would be reduced by 4 Dex and 2 Attack (except for some feats which actually depend on attack bonus, like Multishot).

Actually, and lastly I might add an ability that allows them to treat any composite bow as having a strength bonus higher than it actually does, based on level.

It's a Martial class, so you would want to start with full BAB. They still have to roll to hit, same as a fighter, after all.

If you don't mind Psionics, Dreamscarred Press has a class called the Marksman, which is designed around ranges combat with limited psionic support.

Well, you could take a look at my Archer class in my Aurelia thread. It's a ranger variant of mine, but without the spellcasting and animal companions, being a mundane master of archery. Poor BAB, but a special ranged attack bonus that stacks with it for ranged attacks and determining the rate of attacks with ranged weapons. They get lots of benefits for ranged combat over time, and just a few favored enemies (3 of 'em).

Link to the thread's in my signature. The Archer is one of the early posts in the thread, maybe the fourth or fifth post.

You might find some of the abilities useful to yoink, if nothing else. Oh, it's a 3.0 class, so a few skill names or rules bits may not make sense if you're only familiar with 3.5 (i.e. Wilderness Lore is Survival in 3.5, different degrees of cover are only optional in 3.5, Deflect Arrows doesn't use a Reflex save in 3.5, etc.).
