Bull Rush tie-breaker

Does a Bull Rush use the same tie-breaking rules as other opposed rolls, or do you have to outright win the Bull Rush to be successful (tie=failure)?

Tie = failure. "If you beat the defender's Strength check, you push him back 5 feet."

I agree with you, but just to play devil's advocate, do you beat something if you win on a tie-breaker?

No, the tie-breaking rules are part of how you figure out whether you've beat the defender's Strength check. It's an ability check - see p. 63-64 of the PHB.

Yes. The reasononing is give by Len, but let me provide quotes:

From Bull Rush: "Second, you and the defender make opposed Strength checks."

From Ability Checks: "Essentially, you’re making an untrained skill check."

From Untrained Skill Checks: "Generally, if your character attempts to use a skill he or she does not possess, you make a skill check as normal."

From Opposed Checks: "In case of a tie, the higher skill modifier wins. If these scores are the same, roll again to break the tie."
