Burning Man

the Jester

Legend
Every year I post a similar thread to this...

Burning Man is coming up! If you don't know what it is- it's very hard to describe- easily the weirdest thing I have ever experienced. Nine times. This will be my 10th year!!! :D I'm totally excited! (It happens the last week of August/first week of September every year.)

Anyway, is anyone else from here going??

And I'll repost my almsotexperience with Burning Man :)

I have a friend who lived in Reno for several years. He went to Burning Man 4 or 5 years running (1994 or 95 to 1998 I think it was). He invited me, and one year I decided to go. That was....1996. So I threw my meager belongings on my motorcycle and headed across the country (I was staying in Indiana for a bit before that). I got to Reno after many fun adventures on friday. He had already left, but left a note taped to his front door with directions for me. I headed out onto the playa...well, toward the playa. My bike threw its chain just north of Reno. I had an extra couple links with me, and managed to massage the chain back on, but didnt expect it to make another 10 miles before it happened again. So, I limped back to my friends house, broke in, and hung out for the weekend. I wouldn't have left my bike on the side of the road, but maybe I should have tried to hitch out to Burning Man after I got it back to his house. But I didn't - he came back, we had a fun year or so as roommates, and I headed back to Alaska for a bit.

So, that's my story about Burning Man. I had a chance and missed it. I would suggest it to anyone else though, if you're somewhere in that area (or even the continent - I'm in Europe now which makes it a pretty long ride :))

Hard to describe though it may be... can someone make a stab at it? I've never really quite understood the concept of what descriptions I *have* read of it. *sheepish look*

Not that I'd go anyway, TBH... the "no spectators" thing would leave me out. I only participate in things if I can think of something to add, otherwise I keep to myself.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Everyone can add something to it. :)

Burning Man is sort of like the bastard child of post-apocalyptica plus wilderness desert ordeal plus freaky modern art plus paganistic religious ecstasy plus heavy partying plus unbelievably fantastic community plus hedonistic excess, strung out on a long heavy acid trip and having a great time sipping strange liquids out of an incomprehenisble vessel.

Why, I'll never forget the guys with the little booth set up who claimed that they could mix a few powders and liquids together in yer mouth and make any flavor you could name. They could, too. Steak and potatoes? No problem. Popcorn? Sure! Cotton candy? Easy as pie!

Sigh... hard to describe... if you want some pics, look at my thread from last year.

No, it's an event... a gathering of about 50,000 people in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

Good times!

It's pretty expensive to go, but well worth it.

It's an event. Basically a weekend of hedonism, the industrial equivalent to Rainbow gatherings, as my friend (a regular attendee) tells its.

Sounds like a lot of fun but maybe to...... unstricted for me.

B-day party AND this Jester....?!? You are a party-hardy kind of guy I would say.
