Interesting poll MetalBard, I'm curious to see how it goes.

My coming to Burning Wheel was sort of a long drawn out process. I'd played D&D for 20 years and finally was ready to take a look at some other things. At the time, (about five months ago or so) I didn't even know what ENWorld was. After doing some searching to try and locate a new game that I'd enjoy I discovered this site. I posted a question about wanting a new system to play, and at that time I was primarily just looking for something that allowed for skill advancement through usage. Simple, eh?

I got a moderate response from folks, amongst them was Burning Wheel, but was told I'd get a better response to a nonD20 question over on RPG.net. I'd never heard of that either, but I went and posted the question. Got lots of responses, among them was Burning Wheel. So I made a list of all the games that was recommended and started researching each of them. Eventually I chose Burning Wheel.

I went on a search for a game that would give me skill advancement by usage, not knowing that I was about to evolve my gaming philosophy in such a fantastic direction. I've been pleased ever since.:D

Well, I guess by saying D&D fans, I meant the ones that like D&D, but I see what you're getting at.

Well, to follow up on that. I was interested in it simply because i was looking for something different than D&D. Theme-wise it seems just more of the same (elves, dragons, blah blah), so thats why i haven't bought any of the books. That theme does seem entwined in the rules to some extent. .I have a friend who is talking about running it. We'll see maybe.

I am pretty much happy with D&D and FR in particular. I rarely use any non-WotC stuff but hat is just my group. As much as I appreciate the efforts of most of the decent d20 publisher (Green Ronin, Malhavoc, etc.) I just don’t use it because it sometimes interferes or interacts negatively with published material. I also always question their play testing efforts. I rarely see play testers even listed and that bugs me to no end.

Well, it's not d20, but it is rather extensively play-tested. It's in its first revision.

Stuff followed by a spoiler in the signature.
Dude, you might want to not post spoilers regarding a highly popular book that only came out a few days ago in your signature. That's pretty darn rude.

Seriously. I'll go ahead and bite hard and give you the reaction you obviously wanted zeo_evil. I'm in the middle of reading it and you've ruined what I'm assuming should have been a crucial moment. Damn, I don't even read dust jacket sleeves or chapter headings in the table of contents, just so I can avoid spoilers. Thanks a lot...jerk.

I've reported him to the mods, FWIW.

I am interested in Burning Wheel as a system, though the use of Tolkienesque fantasy tropes could not be more of a turn off . . . but the reasons for my interest in the system are utterly orthogonal to the reasons for my interest in D&D.

Zeo-evil, thank you for editing your signature. I saw the report and would have changed it myself at the risk of seeing the spoiler for the book myself - I'm glad that I've not had some of my enjoyment spoiled.

Please be sensitive about this kind of thing in the future. Thanks.

I don't know enough about it to form an opinion, really.

I voted 'never heard of it', even though I had, as I thought that was the closest option.
