C&C Assault on Blacktooth Ridge

S'mon

Legend
My copy of Assault on Blacktooth Ridge arrived in the post yesterday. Beautiful cover; it looks to have a lot packed into 24pp - in fact it seems a pity it's not 32pp, the extra space would have allowed for more art (which is slightly sparse) and a cleaner layout. I love the teeny-weeny C&C stat blocks; however it's slightly irritating that NPC stat blocks list STR 14 DEX 12 etc but not the derived values "+1" & such - that are actually used in play; C&C stats, like 3e D&D stats, are pretty much totally irrelevant these days, only the derived values are used. They also leave out things like NPCs' calculated weapon damage "d6+1" etc. Not hard for GM to work out, and these NPCs are not primarily for fighting, so it's a minor quibble.
Anyone who's run Assault, what were your experiences? How long did it take to run, and how different was it from a 3e adventure? Any hints/tips?

I totally like the style this adventure is written in. It's been some time since I had an adventure that did not only seemed to be interesting to play but also interesting to read through as a DM. Lots and lots of little details that at first look unimportant but add a nice flavor to the whole location and can be used to expand the adventure quite a bit with some small additional work. Hidden treasure, detailed descriptions, the rumours, little town stories and other stuff make it all come to life.

I had a good time reading through it and I cant wait to let the players loose on it.

Edit: What I would have liked is a detailed player map (without descriptions and text) of the town, one I could take out and put on the table.

I wrote a review that I posted on the boards a while back (I have since figured out how to get a product added to the reviews page, but I thought it was a problem with the review page update at the time).

It looks like a great module, although I still haven't had a chance to actually playtest it. I'm running a party at 4th level, and when AoBR came out, our party was 11th level (we scrapped that party, eventually). I have been thinking of modifying it for the 4th level party (substitute bugbears or at least orcs for goblins, perhaps).

I liked the module as well - and wish there were more like it. It was just the right size for me... on the other hand, the maps were horrendous. Troll Lords still doesn't have a decent cartographer as far as I can tell: we don't need anything fancy, but Blacktooth Ridge was almost as non-functional in this respect as Gaxmoor and Dark Druids. But again, the module is very good. Great line art, interesting locations and a lot of hack and slash action to be had.

[edit] I wouldn't have minded a 32 page module, though, with one more mini-dungeon. Yup, that would have been neat.

BR seems to be a very nice module. I have given it a read-through and have to give Kudos to Davis for such nice work. Next time I get to play C&C I hope to be able to run my guys through this module.

Hm, yeah, I agree, the maps are not great - I thought the Gaxmoor city map was good BTW, but the unkeyed building maps sucked.

I think I read that multiclass rules will be in CZ, when it is released late July or Early August. CKG after the first of the year (this is what I read in another thread.)

Somewhere on Dragonsfoot there is a really nice map download, and I think the Trolls have a much better version at thier site as well.

Can you provide a link? I searched but couldn't find this. Thanks,

Simon
